Shania Twain has reflected on the devastating collapse of her first marriage and revealed how she found love again with a man navigating the very same betrayal.
The 60-year-old singer separated from record producer Robert “Mutt” Lange in 2008 after learning that he had reportedly been having an affair with her close friend and assistant, Marie-Anne Thiébaud.
In an extraordinary twist, Shania later fell in love with Marie-Anne’s then-husband, Swiss businessman Frédéric Thiébaud, after the pair supported each other through the breakdown of their respective marriages.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, Shania revealed that it was Frédéric who first confronted her with the truth about their spouses.
“Fred takes the blinders off, tells me what’s going on. I don’t believe him and I tell him that I think he is imagining things, delusional,” she said.
“It turns out it [the affair] was never going to end. So, Fred and I, we collapse and at some point, we just got to let it go.”
As they attempted to rebuild their lives, their shared heartbreak gradually developed into something deeper.
“And at that time, we found each other and it was really great to say there’s no hope and in knowing that I found out what a beautiful person he was,” Shania explained.
The ‘Man! I Feel Like a Woman!’ singer has previously admitted that the end of her marriage plunged her into such a deep depression that she struggled to see a future for herself.
“There were days I didn’t really care if tomorrow came,” she told AARP in 2020.
She credited Frédéric with helping her survive one of the darkest periods of her life, saying: “Survival is everything. I was in quicksand. I panicked, like everybody does, but I didn’t surrender. I found a way out.”
Shania and Mutt, who share son Eja, finalised their divorce in 2010 after 14 years of marriage. Shania and Frédéric became engaged later that year and married in an intimate ceremony in Puerto Rico on New Year’s Day in 2011.
Shania’s candid reflections come amid a major career resurgence for the country-pop icon. She recently supported Harry Styles on the opening night of his historic Wembley Stadium residency, commanding the stage in a show-stopping ensemble and thrilling the packed London crowd with her biggest hits.
