Fargo actor Scott Hylands dies aged 83

Scott Hylands, the Canadian actor best known for his roles in Night Heat and Fargo, has died at the age of 83.

The sad news was confirmed by his son, cinematographer Luke Hylands, who paid an emotional tribute to his father in a heartfelt Instagram post.

“Husband, Father, Actor, Director, Writer, Storyteller, Friend, and lover of life,” Luke began.

“I am heartbroken to share the news that my dad Scott has passed away Wednesday night. Myself and my family are still trying to process this horrible loss.

“There simply are not enough words I can say about you right now. You are my forever hero and my best friend. Always and forever. I love you. Goodbye Dad. Xo.”

From zoology student to celebrated actor

Born in Alberta, Canada, in 1943, Scott was raised by his mother, Ruth, a nurse and mathematics teacher, after his father, Walter, was killed in action during the Second World War in 1945.

He initially studied zoology at the University of British Columbia before discovering his passion for acting. After transferring to theatre arts, Scott moved to New York City, where he honed his craft on stage before making his big-screen debut in 1969’s Daddy’s Gone A-Hunting.

Over the following decades, he built an impressive résumé with roles in films including Earthquake, Slipstream, Bittersweet Love, Operation Snafu and Fools.

Television audiences also came to know him through appearances in popular series including Kung Fu, Wonder Woman, Police Story, The Waltons, Hart to Hart and The Magician.

Career-defining role in Night Heat

After returning to Canada in the 1980s, Scott landed the role that would define much of his career, starring as Detective Kevin “OB” O’Brien in the police drama Night Heat.

The series ran from 1985 to 1989 and made television history as the first original Canadian drama to air simultaneously on an American television network during its original broadcast. It also became the highest-rated Canadian-produced original drama series in Canada during its run.

Following the show’s success, Scott continued working steadily on both sides of the border, appearing in acclaimed productions including To Catch A Killer, NYPD Blue, Titanic, The X-Files, Stargate SG-1, V and Supernatural.

Scott’s memorable return in Fargo

One of Scott’s final notable screen performances came in 2017, when he portrayed Ennis Stussy in the third season of the Emmy-winning anthology series Fargo.

His character served as the stepfather of Gloria Burgle, played by Carrie Coon, and appeared in one of the season’s pivotal storylines.

With a career spanning more than five decades across film, television and theatre, Scott leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of Canada’s most respected actors.

Scott leaves behind his wife, Veronica, son Luke and daughter Rebecca.
