Top Gun: Maverick star James Handy has passed away at age 81 after being allegedly stabbed by his girlfriend’s son, Michael Gledhill, on Wednesday morning.
44-year-old Michael reportedly called the police himself around 9:30 a.m. on June 3, stating to officers: “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.”
When officers arrived at James’ home in Tarzana, Michael allegedly waved them down and directed them towards the crime scene.
“Upon their arrival, officers discovered 81-year-old James Handy in the front yard of the residence, unconscious and suffering from a stab wound to his chest,” said a press release from the LAPD.
“The victim was transported to a local hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics, where he was pronounced deceased.”
The LAPD added that Michael resided at the location with his mother, who was James’ girlfriend.
© ABC“Detectives believe this is an isolated incident and there appears to be no danger to the public at this time,” they concluded. Michael was then arrested and taken to Van Nuys Jail, where he is being held on a $2 million bond.
James had more than 150 acting credits to his name, having started out in 1977 with an appearance in Ryan’s Hope. Over the years, he starred in projects like Jumanji, Arachnophobia, The Rocketeer, Beverly Hills, 90210, The Young and the Restless, 9-1-1, Alias and Logan.

After his portrayal of Father MacGuffin in 2021’s Senior Entourage, director Brian Connors shared that he was one of the “finest character actors I know”.
