Donald Trump had a deep respect for the late Queen, is friends with King Charles, and has praised both the Prince and Princess of Wales, but the same level of admiration canât be said for Prince Harry. Over the years, the American President and British Prince have traded public jabs, including in the run-up to Charles and Queen Camillaâs historic state visit to the United States in 2026.Â
Days before, the Duke of Sussex made a surprise trip to Ukraine, where he spoke at the Kyiv Security Forum, calling on the United States to honor its âinternational treaty obligations.â Harry said: âThis is a moment for American leadership â a moment for America to show that it can honour its international treaty obligations â not out of charity, but out of its enduring role in global security and strategic stability.â
At the White House, President Trump addressed the Princeâs comments, saying: âI know one thing, Prince Harry is not speaking for the UK, thatâs for sure. I think Iâm speaking for the UK more than Prince Harry,â adding, âBut I appreciate his advice very much.â
In his response, the President also quipped: âHowâs he doing? Howâs his wife? Please give her my regards.â
âNot a fanâ of Harryâs wife
While the President of the United States is a âbig fanâ of Harryâs father, that sentiment does not extend to the Dukeâs wife, Meghan Markle. Before joining the royal family, the Suits star called Trump âmisogynisticâ and âdivisiveâ during a 2016 appearance on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore. When The Sun later informed the President of Meghanâs remarks in 2019, Trump said: âI didnât know that. What can I say? I didnât know that she was nastyâ â he later posted on X: âI never called Meghan Markle ânasty.'â
Though he did say at the time that it was âniceâ the American actress had joined the British royal family, and was rooting for her. âShe will be very good. I hope she does (succeed),â President Trump said.Â
However, he has since changed his tone. In 2020, the President shared that he was ânot a fan ofâ the Duchess, adding, âI would say this, and she probably has heard that, but I wish a lot of luck to Harry, because heâs gonna need it.â
He again expressed his dislike for the Duchess in 2022, telling Piers Morgan that Prince Harry âis whipped like no person I think Iâve ever seen.â The President said: âIâm not a fan of Meghan, Iâm not a fan, and I wasnât right from the beginning. I think poor Harry is being led around by his nose. And I think heâs an embarrassment.â
During the interview, the President predicted that âitâll end badâ for the Duke and Duchess. âI wonder if Harryâs going to go back on his hands and knees back into the beautiful city of London and say please. You know, I think Harry has been led down a path,â he said.
If he were the reigning monarch, President Trump told Piers heâd remove the California-based Duke and Duchessâ titles. He said: âThe only thing I disagree with the [late] Queen on, probably one of the only things ever, is that I think she should have said, âIf thatâs your choice fine, but you no longer have titles and frankly donât come around.'â
The President added that Harry âhas been so disrespectful to the country.â
A late night swipe
Prince Harry took a swipe at Trump while making an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in December 2025. In a skit, the Duke wandered onto the stage looking to audition for The Gingerbread Prince Saves Christmas in Nebraska holiday movie. âYouâre an actual Prince. Why would you want to be in one of those movies?â the host asked, to which Harry responded: âWell, you Americans are obsessed with Christmas movies and youâre clearly obsessed with royalty, so why not?â Â
Stephen pushed back, noting: âI wouldnât say weâre obsessed with royalty.âÂ
âReally?â Harry replied. âI heard you elected a king.â The Princeâs joke was met with boos from members of the audience.
Continuing the bit, Harry told Stephen that to land the role in the (fake) movie, âIâll record a self-tape, Iâll fly myself to an audition, settle a baseless lawsuit with the White House. All the things you people in TV do.â
A response to Trump
Harry fired back at the President in January 2026, after Trump made a remark about NATO allies. The President claimed: âTheyâll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan, or this or that. And they did. They stayed a little back, a little off the front lines.â
Harry, who served two tours in Afghanistan, issued a statement in response to the Presidentâs comments. âIn 2001, NATO invoked Article 5 for the first â and only â time in history. It meant that every allied nation was obliged to stand with the United States in Afghanistan, in pursuit of our shared security. Allies answered that call. I served there. I made lifelong friends there. And I lost friends there,â the Duke said.
âThe United Kingdom alone had 457 service personnel killed. Thousands of lives were changed forever. Mothers and fathers buried sons and daughters. Children were left without a parent. Families are left carrying the cost.â
Harry concluded: âThose sacrifices deserve to be spoken about truthfully and with respect, as we all remain united and loyal to the defence of diplomacy and peace.â
Trump later walked back his comment, writing on Truth Social: âThe GREAT and very BRAVE soldiers of the United Kingdom will always be with the United States of America! In Afghanistan, 457 died, many were badly injured, and they were among the greatest of all warriors. Itâs a bond too strong to ever be broken. The U.K. Military, with tremendous Heart and Soul, is second to none (except for the U.S.A.!). We love you all, and always will!â
Harryâs father and stepmother traveled to the United States in April for a historic state visit to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. According to the Daily Mailâs Richard Eden, President Trump spoke with a British visitor about the Duke of Sussex, asking: Â âCan you take him back?â
The Presidentâs second son, Eric Trump, has made similar remarks in the past. Speaking to GB News in 2024, the first son said: âYou can happily have those two [Meghan and Harry], we might not want them anymore, it feels like theyâre on an island of their own.â
Meghan and Harry have been living across the pond since stepping back from royal duties in 2020. The year before relocating to California, Harry made an appearance during President Trumpâs first state visit to the UK, but did not attend the state banquet held at Buckingham Palace. When the Trumps returned to the UK in 2025 for their second state visit, the President noticeably omitted the Duke and Duchess of Sussex from his speech.Â
âI just want to say that His Majesty has also raised a remarkable son, His Royal Highness, Prince of Wales, really amazing. Weâve gotten to know you and I think youâre going to have an unbelievable success in future,â he said. âMelania and I are delighted to visit again with Prince William and to see Her Royal Highness, Princess Catherine, so radiant and so healthy and so beautiful. Itâs really a great honour.â
More praises were sung during Charlesâ trip to D.C., with the President hailing both the King and Queen as âincredible people.â While Charles is the âgreatest Kingâ in President Trumpâs book, itâs clear that the royalâs younger son, Prince Harry, is written very differently in that same book.bri
