Queen Mary was the proudest mother on Thursday as she watched her eldest son, Crown Prince Christian, complete a major milestone.
Proving that royals are just like the rest of us, the Danish monarch, 54, took pictures on her iPhone and rushed to take pictures as Christian, 20, was appointed a second lieutenant in the army at the Guards Barracks in Slagelse.
She was joined by her husband, King Frederik, and twins, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, 15. However, Princess Isabella, 19, was absent from the occasion.
One particularly sweet family moment saw Mary waiting around as Prince Christian chatted with personnel including Commander of the Army Command Peter Boyse.
After getting increasingly impatient, Mary threw caution to the wind as she rushed over to give him a long and affectionate hug.
As the family sat to watch the ceremony, Mary made sure she could remember the moment forever by whipping out her phone and taking as many pictures as possible!
The ceremony marks an important step in the Crown Prince’s military training. His initial training began in August 2025 after completing his military service in the Guard Hussars Regiment.
From August, he will serve as a platoon leader in the Royal Guard, where he will be responsible for the training and daily management of a group of recruits.
In many ways, Christian is following a similar path to the future Queen of Spain, Princess Leonor, who is completing three years of training in the army, navy and air force.
It’s been an important day for the Danish royal family. As Crown Prince Christian celebrated his milestone, his grandmother, Queen Margrethe, 86, returned to official engagements.
The former monarch attended the awarding of the “Prince Henrik Prize” at Fredensborg Palace in Copenhagen, the first time she’s been seen in public after her hospital stay last month.
