Michelle Obama has admitted she has a guilty pleasure when it comes to reality television – and she credits her daughters, Sasha and Malia, entirely for getting her addicted. The former First Lady revealed that she’s a fan of the dating series Love Island, but her daughters are behind on the current season.
“That’s mother-daughter time, you know. And they’re behind, they got me hooked,’ she shared during a chat with actress Quinta Brunson on her podcast Higher Ground. “And I was like, ‘Have you started the next season?’ And they were like, ‘No! We’re busy!’ You need to get some more free time!” Love Island USA is currently airing its 13th season after being a spin-off to the UK instalment.
Michelle Obama’s dating advice for daughters
Michelle has offered her daughters her wise advice when it comes to their dating lives. Michelle addressed the topic of dating an episode of her IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson podcast. “I just try to get them to stay open to people,” she explained.
© Instagram“The thing that I did do was date a lot. And so when Barack showed up, I had experiences to compare him against. I knew a lot of [how] I didn’t like this. I didn’t like that.”
She continued: “We try to sort of educate the girls by sharing our experiences,” she said. “So my whole thing is date. Date a lot, and if you run into a bad date or have a bad experience, move on quickly.”

Barack Obama and Michelle first met in June 1989, when the former joined the law firm Sidley & Austin. Michelle, then Michelle Robinson, was his senior adviser for his first three months, and declined his initial offers to date. In July 1991, nearly two years later, Barack proposed after passing the bar exam. On October 3, 1992, they tied the knot in front of loved ones at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.

In 2021, she transferred to the University of Southern California to be closer to her sister. Sasha graduated in 2023 with a degree in sociology. Though after she graduated from USC, her name appeared in the credits of the series Couples Therapy, leading many to believe she was entering the entertainment industry like her sister, she has since gone back to school.
Both sisters now live together in Los Angeles, with Malia pursuing a career in filmmaking following her Harvard graduation. She has worked as a writer, including on Donald Glover’s Swamp, and as a director, with her directorial debut being the short film The Heart during Sundance in January 2024.
