John Oliver is heading to soap opera screens.
The âLast Week Tonightâ host revealed on Sunday that he booked roles on both âDays of Our Livesâ and âGeneral Hospital.â
The 49-year-old called the latter âeverything [he] hoped it would beâ in a statement to Variety over the weekend.
âItâs a true honor to be a small stain on the history of this illustrious show,â he told the outlet, going on to call âDays of Our Livesâ a âhuge honorâ as well.
âI am happy to say that Iâve already taped a week of episodes,â Oliver said. âItâs been home to some of the most renowned soap opera actors, like Deidre Hall, Susan Seaforth Hayes and John Aniston. Itâs also featured guest appearances from legends like Dick Van Dyke, Betty White and now me.â
The comedian, who has been a late-night host since April 2014, clarified that âsoap opera acting is not [his] Plan B.â
He explained, âI simply offered my hypothetical acting abilities to any soap that would meet my terms, which were: I wanted to play a character with a ridiculous name, I wanted a juicy storyline like murder or slapping and I wanted a dramatic close-up of my face.â
Oliver put his hat in the ring during a March episode of his HBO show after finding out about Stephen A. Smithâs recurring role on âGeneral Hospitalâ as Brick.
âTo all the soap operas out there, let me say this: I am officially offering myself to you,â he announced. âWrite me a role, and Iâll be on your set so fast, itâll make your head spin.â
Smith, 58, subsequently asked Oliver via Instagram whether he was âready to commit.â
The ESPN commentator said, âThis is serious, OK? Youâve gotta be willing to be that bad guy. ⊠Canât have the smile on your face all the time.
âYouâve gotta wear that scowl, youâve gotta be irritating, youâve gotta be all of those things,â he continued. âYouâve gotta welcome being disliked.â
âGeneral Hospitalâ executive producer Frank Valentini âdidnât hesitate for a secondâ when he saw Oliverâs public plea for a role, he told Variety on Sunday.
âHe was everything youâd hope heâd be: prepared, professional, funny and genuinely kind to everyone on set,â Valentini recalled.
âHe plays an integral character in the story, and I canât wait for fans to see who he crosses paths within Port Charles.â
Oliverâs three âGeneral Hospitalâ episodes will air July 2, 3 and 6, with his âDays of Our Livesâ debut, meanwhile, taking place on August 11, 12 and 14.
