“I’m Every Woman” singer Chaka Khan is back and better than ever.
The 73-year-old shows no sign of slowing down, as she made a huge announcement.
Chaka has put out new music for the first time in over seven years, with her new single called “Chakzilla,” which was co-written by Sia.
In the new music video, which was released on April 7, the singer was first spotted watching a Godzilla-esque film in the movie theater.
As the video continues, “Chakzilla” is eventually revealed to be Chaka herself as a “30-story creature.”
Chaka’s catchy lyrics depict a love song, as she sings: “You’re the kind that I like, creature of the night…I know that I am great. I’m a giant…cause you’re my equal babe.”
Instead of tearing the city down and demolishing everything in sight like Godzilla, Chaka flips the script and helps build the city up and fix what’s broken, with her superhuman powers.
Podcasters in the video were heard analyzing: “Chakzilla is restoring the city…Chakzilla is good for the city. Putting buildings back together.”
What Chakzilla represents for Chaka
The refreshing music video came from a personal space for the performer. She shared: “When I was a kid, I really liked the Godzilla movies. When we came up with [‘Chakzilla’] as a title, lots of things just ran through my head and made a lot of sense,” per People.
Chaka credits Sia for coming up with the name Chakzilla and revealed: “I would’ve never thought of that. She’s clever. She comes up with lots of ideas.”
In a hilarious statement to the outlet, Sia uniquely expressed: “Chaka is the Godzilla of chanteuses alive, and it was my honor to collaborate with her on this music!”
Chaka wanted to reverse the usual negative connotation of the character and explained: “Instead of becoming a monster and just tearing up things, I became sort of a monster of a person who does good things.”
She added: “Because that’s closer to what I am. I tried to make it true to who I am and what I’m about.”
The star emphasized the positive bigger picture of how she sees herself reflected in Chakzilla, expressing: “Everything I can that is cuckoo and crazy and awry. I’m trying to fix and help a lot of people who are having a really hard time in this world today. There’s lots of madness going on.”
The performer admitted that although she made the video shoot look easy, it’s a difficult task.
She joked that the best part of the project was “when it was over,” because “it was a lot of work.”
New era
The new single is just the start of Chaka’s return. Sia and Chaka are also joining creative forces for Chaka’s upcoming album of the same name which will come out on September 18.
The star hints that listeners should get ready to dance, adding: “It’s a really, really great album, a great CD with great songs. It’s going to be on the pop dance side. We’ve got lots of great people collaborating as well.”
