Brian Cox went on a rant against multiple A-list actors, including Johnny Depp and Ian McKellen, in a new interview with The Times UK.
The âSuccessionâ star called Depp âso overblownâ and âso overrated,â noting in the interview published Friday that he was relieved he turned down Jonathan Pryceâs role in the âPirates of the Caribbeanâ franchise.
As for McKellen, Cox said that his âX2â co-starâs acting is ânot to my taste.â
Cox also took aim at Edward Norton, whom he said is âa pain in the arse,â and Kevin Spacey, whom he described as âa stupid, stupid man.â
Directors and writers werenât safe from Coxâs wrath, either.
The 79-year-old called Quentin Tarantino âmeretricious,â Michael Caton-Jones âa complete arseholeâ and David Hare a âsee you next Tuesday.â
In addition, Cox, who played Winston Churchill in the 2017 biopic âChurchill,â vented about Gary Oldman winning the Best Actor Oscar for his role as the UK Prime Minister in âDarkest Hour,â released the same year.
Oldmanâs performance, Cox said, was âcobblersâ and âa crowd-pleasing farrago.â
Cox also disagreed with Margot Robbie being cast as Cathy in the new adaptation of the 1939 film âWuthering Heights,â which is one of Coxâs favorite movies.
âMargot Robbie is far too beautiful for that role,â he told The Times UK.
âI mean, I think there should be something more of the Gypsy about her but itâs wrong of me to judge,â he added. âIt may be a brilliant film.â
Cox aired his beef with Daniel Day-Lewis, as well, which started when he criticized his âSuccessionâ co-star Jeremy Strongâs method acting in 2023. Lewis, who was Strongâs inspiration, told Cox last year to get off his âsoapbox.â
When asked if heâs reached out to Day-Lewis, Cox had a cheeky response.
âChildren donât say, âWhatâs my motivation?ââ he told The Times UK.
Cox went on, âNo, I havenât reached out because itâs got nothing to do with Dan Day-Lewis. Dan Day-Lewis, heâs discreet. He never upsets it [the filming process].â
The Emmy Award winner added that he didnât walk to talk more about Strong, 47, because his former on-screen son has âbegged me to stop talking about him.â
âHeâs a good actor, Jeremy. Heâs a wonderful actor. Itâs just all the bollocks that goes with it. You watch children â they donât say, âWhatâs my motivation?â They just do it!â
After dissing so many stars in the interview, Cox was asked if being so blunt had lost him friends or caused him problems.
âWell, I donât know yet if itâs caused me problems,â he replied with a laugh. âI mean, my wife keeps saying, âBrian, be careful. Brian, be careful.â
Cox added, âI think, âFâk it, I donât want to be careful anymore! Iâll be 80 this year. Fâk it! Iâm gonna say what I want to say.ââ
