Academy Award-winning singer-songwriter Glen Hansard died in a motorcycle crash on July 29 at the age of 56.

The Irish Times reported that The Frames frontman was killed in a single-vehicle crash at the Strawberry Beds in West Dublin just before 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

ATC Management, who represented Hansard, confirmed the “Once” star’s passing in a statement.

“With broken hearts we announce the passing of Glen Hansard who passed away, in the early hours of this morning, following a road traffic accident in Dublin,” they said. “Glen’s family is deeply shocked and heartbroken by this tragic loss and respectfully requests privacy at this extremely difficult time.”

Hansard rose to prominence as the frontman of The Frames, an Irish rock band which he founded in 1990. He was also part of the folk-rock duo The Swell Season. He made his film debut as guitar player Outspan Foster in Alan Parker’s film “The Commitments” in 1991.

The Irish musician is perhaps best known, though, for his work in the musical film “Once” alongside his The Swell Season bandmate, Markéta Irglová.

Hansard played the unnamed male protagonist in “Once” opposite Irglová as the unnamed female protagonist.

“Once” is a musical about a street musician (Hansard) and an immigrant (Irglová), and their eventful week together writing, rehearsing and recording songs that tell their love story.

Notably, Hansard and Irglová wrote all of the songs for the film, which was later adapted into the Tony Award-winning musical. The soundtrack includes the breakout hit “Falling Slowly,” for which Hansard and Irglová won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 2008 ceremony.
