Tim Allen (Tim Taylor)

While Tim headed up the Taylor family as patriarch Tim, he continued his success in television and film after the show ended, reprising his iconic role as the voice of Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story franchise and returning as Scott Calvin/Santa Claus in The Santa Clause films.

He also managed to repeat his sitcom success by playing conservative marketing director Mike Baxter in Last Man Standing and stubborn widower Matt Parker in Shifting Gears. The actor, now 72, has also starred in Galaxy Quest, Christmas with the Kranks, Wild Hogs and The Shaggy Dog.

Around the same time that Home Improvement came to an end, Tim separated from his first wife, Laura Deibel, in 1999 and they later divorced in 2003. They share one daughter, Katherine Allen, 37, together.

Tim went on to marry his current wife, actress Jane Hajduk, with whom he shares another daughter, Elizabeth Allen Dick, 17.

Patricia Richardson (Jill Taylor)

Patricia won fans over as the quick-witted and level-headed Jill Taylor and, like her character on the show, was a mother to three children – Roxanne, Joseph and Henry – in real life.

Having gone through a divorce from her ex-husband, actor Ray Baker, in 1995, Patricia wanted to be more present in her children’s lives and ultimately turned down a ninth season. “I told everybody, there’s not enough money in the world to get me to do a ninth year. This show is over. It needs to end,” she told the LA Times.

After her stint on the show, Patricia went on to star in The West Wing, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy and The Blacklist. She also earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for her performance in Ulee’s Gold in 1997.

The actress, now 75, also reunited with Tim on screen in Last Man Standing and Shifting Gears, and has enjoyed a number of theatre roles Off-Broadway.

Zachery played macho eldest brother Brad in Home Improvement, and went on to appear in a plethora of TV and film projects like ER, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Smallville, Veronica Mars, First Kid and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.

In his personal life, however, the 44-year-old has faced a series of personal struggles and legal issues, with charges including multiple DUIs, fourth-degree felony assault, felony strangulation and second-degree domestic violence.

In November 2025, Zachery faced his sixth arrest in five years for allegedly violating his probation from his prior domestic violence conviction.

He shares four children with his ex-wife, Carly Matros, and three children with model Johnnie Faye Cartwright.

Jonathan played Randall William “Randy” Taylor, the middle son of Tim and Jill. During the show’s eighth and final season, Randy’s character was written out as Jonathan prepared for college. He went on to attend an impressive list of institutions, including Harvard University, Columbia University and the University of St Andrews.

“I’d been going nonstop since I was 8 years old,” he told PEOPLE in 2013. “I wanted to go to school, to travel and have a bit of a break.”

The Lion King actor, now 44, went on to enjoy roles in Common Ground, Ally McBeal, Smallville and Last Man Standing. Known for fiercely guarding his private life, Jonathan has not publicly discussed his current relationship status.

Taran played Mark, the youngest son of the Taylor family. Because he was only seven when the show started, viewers literally watched him grow up on television.

Taran went on to feature in only a handful of projects after the show ended. When he turned 18, he gained control of his $1.5 million trust fund, something he’d previously sued his parents over after alleging they were trying to use it for themselves, which they denied.

In 2012, Taran was reportedly arrested for DUI and drug possession and was later “sentenced to a 12-hour program for the DUI offense, and a 6-month drug diversion program for the weed charge,” according to TMZ.

The former actor married Heidi van Pelt from 2001 to 2007 and is now reportedly a Technical Manager for the Community Submersibles Project.

Richard played Tim’s Tool Time co-host Al Borland. After the show ended, he continued to enjoy a busy work schedule, booking roles on projects like Snow Buddies, The Bold and the Beautiful, Ctrl, Last Man Standing and Shifting Gears.

The 70-year-old has been married to actress and singer Tudi Roche since 1985 and the pair share one son, Cooper Karn Wilson, 34, together.

Earl Hindman (Wilson Wilson, Jr.)

Earl played Wilson Wilson Jr., the Taylors’ highly educated and eccentric neighbour who never failed to raise a smile.

Also known for his roles in Ryan’s Hope, The Parallax View and Silverado, Earl went on to appear in smaller roles on Law & Order, Deadline and Hopewell after Home Improvement ended.

Earl married actress Molly McGreevy in 1976, and the couple welcomed three children,

Pamela, Barbara and Jessica, together. In 2003, Earl sadly passed away from lung cancer at the age of 61.
