Suri Cruise has taken another significant step in forging her own identity. The 20-year-old daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes has officially dropped her famous surname and is now legally known as Suri Noelle, according to newly surfaced public records.
The documents reportedly show that Suri registered to vote in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, where she attends Carnegie Mellon University, under the name Suri Noelle. Pennsylvania law requires voters to register using their legal name, indicating the change has been formally completed.
While it is unclear exactly when the name change became official, Suri has publicly used the surname Noelle for more than a year.
A fresh start
Suri first sparked speculation that she had distanced herself from her father’s surname during her graduation from New York City’s LaGuardia High School in June 2024.
Rather than being listed as Suri Cruise in the ceremony programme, she appeared under the name Suri Noelle, a tribute widely believed to reference her mother Katie’s middle name.
If the legal paperwork was completed before she left for college, it is unlikely to appear in public records. Before moving to Pennsylvania, Suri lived in New York, where name change requests are automatically sealed or can be sealed upon request.
Building her own career
The latest development comes as Suri continues to make a name for herself in the performing arts.
Now a student in Carnegie Mellon University’s prestigious School of Drama, she is studying musical theatre after discovering her passion for acting while attending LaGuardia High School, where she starred as Morticia Addams in The Addams Family: A New Musical.
Earlier this year, she appeared in the staged reading Cosmic Microwave Background at Pittsburgh’s New Hazlett Theater.
She is also set to perform in Midsummer!, a contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, alongside fellow Carnegie Mellon students. The production will travel to Scotland next month for its UK debut at the 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Life with Katie Holmes
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes welcomed Suri in April 2006 before marrying later that year. The former couple divorced in 2012, after which Suri remained with her mother in New York.
Katie has previously spoken about the close relationship she shares with her daughter, admitting in recent years that the pair “kind of grew up together.”
Over the years, the actress has worked to give Suri as normal an upbringing as possible while keeping much of her personal life private.
