âThe Devil Wears Prada 2â landed in the No. 1 spot on its first day in theaters Friday, raking in $32.5 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
The Post praised the sequel to the 2006 film -âbased on the novel by Lauren Weisberger, former assistant to Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour â as âlikable and thankfully not the garish embarrassment that it could have so easily become.â
Meryl Streep, who plays icy magazine editor Miranda Priestly, based on Wintour, revealed that she asked for double the salary she was originally offered to reprise the role â and her wish was granted.
âI knew it was going to be a hit, and I wanted to see if I doubled my ask,â she told host Jenna Bush Hager on Wednesdayâs âToday with Jenna & Sheinelle.â
âAnd they went right away and said sure. And I thought, Iâm 50, 60 â it took me this long to understand that I could do that.â
The biopic âMichael,â based on the life of the late King of Pop Michael Jackson â which The Post called âa cheap and embarrassing boreâ â dropped one spot to second, with sales of $14.4 million.
The film surpassed the $300 million mark in global sales yesterday to become the second-highest earning biopic in history after âBohemian Rhapsody,â which chronicled the life of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.
âThe Super Mario Galaxy Movieâ moved down a notch to third, earning $2.72 million on its fifth Friday in theaters.
The animated adventure sequel, based on the hit Nintendo game franchise, is currently the highest-grossing movie of the year, with a worldwide haul of over $1.8 billion.
The supernatural horror flick âHokum,â starring Adam Scott, took fourth, with a $2.6 million take on its first day at the box office.
In fifth was âProject Hail Mary,â which took home just over $2.2 million on its seventh Friday in theaters.
