Loyal followers of royal fashion will know that elegant evening gowns, head-turning hats and killer heels come with the territory. When the rulebook detailing appropriate wear for formal events is shelved, these ladies have proved that a casual look can still showcase the more understated or orchestrated side of one’s personal taste.

The Princess of Wales, who went by Kate Middleton at the time, made a quiet appearance at the Chakravarty Cup charity polo match at Ham Polo Club in June 2006 to support her then-boyfriend, Prince William. Kate, who was 24 at the time, sported a floaty red halterneck dress with heeled crimson wedges and tiny shades.
Meghan Markle met Prince Harry in July 2016 when the former Suits actress travelled to London for Wimbledon. She was spotted at said tennis tournament sitting in the stands in a black wrap dress and a Ralph Lauren tan bag to match her gladiator heels.
In 2015, the Duchess of Edinburgh was joined by her daughter, Lady Louise Windsor, at the Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park. She sported a casual striped T-shirt with three-quarter-length trousers and slip-on shoes.
In August 2010, Queen Letizia of Spain arrived at the Club Nautico in Palma de Mallorca. She oozed cool in trendy ballet pumps teamed with denim capris and an embellished T-shirt. Her Ray Ban aviators added to the impact of the look.
In August 2024, King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark swapped formal royal engagements for a day at the Olympics. Spotted at the Tennis Men’s Semifinal match between Carlos Alcaraz of Spain and Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada, Queen Mary donned white chinos with open-toe sandals, a blue cotton shirt and oversized shades.
Princess Diana was the ultimate style icon of the 90s when it came to off-duty fashion. Perhaps our favourite look came in 1995 when she was spotted leaving the Harbour Club fitness centre in Chelsea. She teamed peach cycling shorts with Reebok trainers and a graphic sweatshirt.
Before marrying Prince Albert in 2011, Princess Charlene swam competitively. In June 2007, Charlene was spotted arriving at the Monte Carlo Bay Hotel for a private party and looked stunning in white. Nowadays, she’s all about a pair of designer heels, but here, Prince Albert’s then-girlfriend chose laid-back sandals and wore her platinum blonde hair unstyled.
