Trudie Styler shared the emotional moment she received one of Naples’ highest civic honours, describing the recognition as “unexpected” and saying it left her heart “filled with gratitude and love.”
The filmmaker, actress and wife of music icon Sting took to Instagram to reveal she had been awarded the Medal of the City of Naples following her work shining a spotlight on the Italian city’s people, culture and resilience.
Alongside a series of photographs documenting the special occasion, Trudie reflected on the deep connection she has formed with Naples since making her documentary about the city.
“To be given the Medal of the City of Naples is an unexpected honour, one that fills my heart with gratitude and love,” she wrote.
‘May I come in?’
Recalling her first visit, Trudie explained that she arrived with little more than a camera crew and an open mind.
“When I first came to Naples to make my film about your city, I arrived with a camera crew, a curious mind, and a simple question: ‘Posso entrare?’ – May I come in?”
“And Naples welcomed me in, with open arms.”
The post included images of Trudie attending the official medal presentation, taking in panoramic views across the city towards Mount Vesuvius and celebrating with locals in Naples’ historic streets.
One particularly joyful photograph showed the 72-year-old laughing as she embraced an elderly couple, while another captured her posing with smiling residents who had clearly become friends during the filmmaking process.
‘Made me feel like family’
Reflecting on what made the city so special, Trudie praised the generosity she encountered throughout her time there.
“Whether people have a little or a lot, everyone offers something: a coffee, a meal, a story, a song, a smile, a word of encouragement… the doors are open.”
She concluded with a heartfelt promise to continue championing the city wherever she goes.
“Wherever I go, I will continue to speak about the Naples that I’ve come to know – the Naples of humanity, of compassion, resilience and creativity; the Naples that welcomed a stranger and made her feel like family.”
Celebrity friends react
The moving post quickly attracted messages of congratulations from friends and followers, including actress Rita Wilson.
“You are a force,” Rita wrote. “Congratulations! Keep bringing your unique perspectives to all you do.”
Fans also flooded the comments with praise, applauding Trudie for using her work to highlight the warmth and spirit of Naples rather than relying on familiar stereotypes.
The honour comes after Trudie spent years documenting the city’s rich culture and communities, with her project focusing on the people whose generosity and resilience left a lasting impression on her.
Married to Sting since 1992, Trudie has long balanced her acting career with producing, directing and humanitarian work, regularly using film to tell stories that celebrate communities and inspire social change.
