Sarah Ferguson has been keeping a low profile in Austria in recent days following the arrest of her ex-husband, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest on 19 February 2026 and the stripping of her and Andrew’s Duke and Duchess of York titles and honours in 2025.
But the former Duchess, 66, also has the opportunity to lie low in Argentina, as royal fans might now know, but she partly owns a ranch there. According to the Daily Mail, the mother of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie co-owns a “vast” ranch in South America where she has plenty of contacts.
Why does Sarah own a property in Argentina?
The link to Argentina came through her late mother, Susan Barrantes. Susan, who died in a car accident in 1998, was married to Argentinian polo player Hector Barrantes from 1975 to 1990, having split from Sarah’s father, Major Ronald Ferguson, in 1974.
Hector’s nephew Martin, who has known Sarah all his life, lives in Buenos Aires but also spends time at the El Pucara, the 1000-acre ranch situated a six-hour drive from the Argentine capital. It is also reportedly 45 minutes away from Tres Lomas, where Hector and Susan once lived.
Has Sarah gone to Argentina?
Andrew’s ex-wife is said not to have visited the Argentine ranch for more than 15 years, with Martin having last contacted his cousin three months ago, according to a new interview he gave the Daily Mail.
“I have spoken to her [and] can tell you that she just wants to protect her children and her grandchildren,” Barrantes told the newspaper. “We spoke around three months ago. I wanted to give her my support in a difficult moment for her, with all that was going on with the Epstein files.
“Sarah is going through a difficult moment, and I wanted to send her our support. She is a valued member of our family. Given the situation, she seemed to be in good spirits.”
Sarah’s international property history
The ranch in Argentina is not the only international property owned by Sarah. She also once owned a Swiss chalet with her ex-husband, with the pair buying the property in the resort of Verbier in 2014.
At the time, her spokesman confirmed the move, saying: “She has a lot of international business commitments and has moved on considerably. So this is really showing she is becoming a more independent unit [from Andrew].” She maintained a London home, and the chalet was reportedly sold for £22 million in 2022.
