The Prince and Princess of Wales married in 2011 and their royal nuptials are still widely considered the most memorable of all time. While Kate’s stunning Alexander McQueen bridal gown was the ultimate show-stopper, there were plenty of famous wedding guests’ moments we will never forget.
There’s no better place to don an elaborate hat than at a wedding, especially one of such historical significance, and Westminster Abbey was filled with a sea of statement headpieces for the service, which saw royals from around the world attend.
Beatrice’s most famous hat
However, the prize for the most noticeable hat went to Princess Beatrice. King Charles’ niece was a vision in her blush pink Valentino dress, but it was her iconic Philip Treacy hat that got everyone talking.
© WireImageThe hat proved to be divisive among fans due to its elaborate, 3D stature. Although seen as a work of art, it sparked internet memes worldwide, with many remarking it looked like a toilet seat, as well as likening it to a pretzel.
Philip Treacy speaks out
In a new interview with The Telegraph, the celebrated milliner said of the creation: “There was a moment where I thought I would find myself with my head on a spike outside the Tower of London,” he mused. The flamboyant hat was sold for £81,100 on eBay soon after, with proceeds from the sale split between the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, and British charity Children in Crisis.
© Getty“I love it,” he said of the style. “If there was no opinion it would be pointless. It’s impossible to design something that billions of people agree with.”
© Chris JacksonRemarking on his success, he added: “I’ve always lived with creative pressure. You never get away from it. Fashion is about ‘next’ so I’ve got to wow every time. It’s hard to deliver wow constantly,” he noted.

Philip has designed signature, one-off pieces for clients such as Madonna, Celine Dion, Joan Collins and Goldie Hawn, as well as hats for the royals, including the Princess of Wales and Queen Camilla.
