Prince Harry has shared an emotional reaction to England’s heartbreaking FIFA World Cup semi-final defeat as he stepped out without wife Meghan Markle for a solo appearance in New York City.
The Duke of Sussex attended the TIME100 Sports Gala on Thursday evening, where he was asked about England’s crushing 2-1 loss to Argentina in Wednesday’s semi-final.
When asked whether he was saddened by the result, Harry gave a brief but heartfelt response. “Of course,” he told Pagesix.
The 41-year-old appeared at the prestigious event alone, with Meghan remaining at home. During the evening, Harry was seen chatting with TIME CEO Jessica Sibley as guests gathered to celebrate some of the world’s biggest sporting achievements.
England’s hopes of reaching the World Cup final came to an end after Argentina mounted a stunning comeback to secure a 2-1 victory.
Harry was far from the only high-profile supporter left devastated by the result. David Beckham, who watched the match from the stands in Atlanta, Georgia, was visibly emotional following the final whistle. The football icon was seen wiping away tears before being comforted by his son, Cruz Beckham, who wrapped his father in a hug.
Prince William also shared his disappointment, posting a heartfelt message on X following England’s exit. “England, you gave it everything and we are all so proud of you,” the Prince of Wales wrote.
“Thank you to everyone on and off the pitch, for an incredible tournament. The fight and belief you have shown has inspired us all.
“The most complete England team in a tournament. Hold your heads high.”
Harry’s appearance at the TIME100 Sports Gala came shortly after his return from the UK, where he reunited with members of the royal family during a landmark visit.
The trip attracted widespread attention after Harry claimed that an invitation to stay at Buckingham Palace had been withdrawn at the last minute amid ongoing security concerns.
Despite the reported drama, the visit ultimately marked a significant moment for the Sussex family.
Harry and Meghan travelled to Britain with their children, Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, where they reunited with King Charles and Queen Camilla.
Buckingham Palace confirmed on July 10 that the family met privately at Highgrove House, the King’s country residence in Gloucestershire.
The reunion was particularly poignant as it marked the first time in four years that King Charles had seen his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet.
