Fans of the show will remember that the actor and rapper, 58, played Special Agent Sam Hanna for the entire 14-season run of the show’s very first spin-off, NCIS: Los Angeles, which was sadly canceled in 2023.

Since NCIS: LA’s conclusion, LL Cool J has appeared in other variants of the franchise, including NCIS: Hawai’i (which his co-star Daniela Ruah directed several episodes for), and the main show. He is set to make even more appearances in NCIS episodes throughout this month.

What is NCIS: New York about?

A summary for the upcoming spin-off reads: “Legendary NCIS Agent Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) returns to his hometown of New York City to their field office, partnering with a roguish agent and helping lead a new team as they are tasked with high-stakes missions to defend one of the most vital cities and ports in the world.”

Who else will work on NCIS: New York?

Scott Caan will co-star as the “roguish agent” beside Sam Hanna, per CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach, who announced the show’s arrival in a press conference with the network’s coming schedule.

R. Scott Gemmill, Byron Balasco, Jason Barrett join LL Cool J as executive producers on the spin-off, with Byron also serving as showrunner. R. Scott Gemmill wrote the pilot for the new series, having served as the writer for all 14 seasons of NCIS: LA and also the showrunner for seven of those.

The CBS fall 2026-27 line-up

Per her statement about the coming fall line-up: “CBS broadcasts the most-watched entertainment shows in the country and continues to launch more every season.”

“We’ll build on that this fall by expanding the powerful NCIS franchise, introducing a new original drama from the creators of THE GOOD WIFE and ELSBETH and a new comedy from the acclaimed duo behind GHOSTS. This all adds up to another schedule built for launching new hits, scaling audiences and growing content value.”

Speaking specifically of LL Cool J’s return, Amy Reisenbach added: “LL is like a member of our family at CBS, and he’s done pop-ins at NCIS the last two years, and it’s been really successful.”

“And the opportunity for Sam Hanna — who is originally from New York but lived in LA for NCIS: LA — to send him back home felt like a really ripe creative space to play in.”

When will NCIS: New York air?

As part of the fall line-up, Tuesday nights from 8-11 PM will be dubbed “NCIS Night,” with the flagship series airing from 8-9 PM, followed by NCIS: New York from 9-10 PM, and then NCIS: Origins, which moves down a slot from 10-11 PM.
