With history-making appearances in timeless classics like Elf, Step Brothers, and Anchorman, it’s no wonder that Will Ferrell is one of Hollywood’s most beloved and enduring stars.

For more than three decades, the 59-year-old has captivated audiences with his laugh-out-loud comedy and lovable characters. But what some may not know about the actor is that he isn’t the only one in his family to become a Hollywood stalwart.

His brother, Patrick Ferrell, is also an actor and producer with a number of impressive credits and has worked behind the scenes on many of the same productions as his brother.

Growing up

Patrick is 56 years old and the younger sibling of Will. The pair grew up in Irvine, California, with mother Betty Kay Overman, a teacher, and father Roy Lee Ferrell, a musician who played with the Righteous Brothers.

The brothers’ parents split in the 1970s, and they went on to live with their mother in Irvine; meanwhile, their father often worked away.

They both attended the University of Southern California, with Patrick following in his older brother’s footsteps to pursue a career in the entertainment business.

Will has previously admitted he didn’t necessarily have his mind set on becoming an actor, but Patrick encouraged him to develop his love of performance art.

In 2009, he opened up about how his brother developed his love of comedy. He said that it was often not a comedic moment itself but seeing Patrick laugh that would go on to crack him up.

He said: “I would love watching stuff with my brother because things would tickle him, and it would get me going,” Will told the outlet. “I would laugh at watching my brother laugh.”

In fact, the Elf actor actually studied sports information at university, initially believing he would go into sports broadcasting.

Career in film

Meanwhile, Patrick had his heart set on the stars and majored in film, cinema, and video studios for his undergraduate degree before going on to study cinematography for his master’s.

During this period, he acted in a short comedy film titled August Blowout, written by his brother Will and Adam McKay. Since then, Patrick has worked on a number of short projects, including a handful of roles in his brother’s films.

The pair worked together on Saturday Night Live during the mid-1990s, with Patrick taking on various minor roles over a three-year period. He also had cameos in several movies, including a security guard in Elf and a precinct detective in The Other Guys.

While little is known about Patrick’s personal life, he married Sarah Grogan in 2021 in Beverly Hills, California.
