Nick Reiner was back in court for a pretrial hearing after being indicted on first-degree murder charges for the December 2025 deaths of his parents Rob and Michele Reiner.
During his court appearance, which Us attended, Nick, 32, wore a brown jail uniform, accompanied by a pair of white socks and black shoes. His hair was dark brown and short, while his beard was grown out and stubbly but not unkept. An onlooker commented that Nick looked like he gained a little weight and looked “healthy.”
When the judge asked if Nick understood what a general time waiver is and what it does, he replied with an audible “yes.” The judge then asked if he was entering into a general time waiver. Nick responded again in the affirmative. (A general time waiver is a legal agreement where a defendant gives up their Constitutional right to a speedy trial within a set of specific statutory deadlines.)
When the hearing ended, Nick said “thank you” to the judge before he was escorted out with his attorney. While leaving the courtroom, Nick looked straight ahead and showed no emotion.
Earlier in the day, Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman told NBC News and other reporters that prosecutors would not be pursuing the death penalty in Nick’s case.
“After a careful and thorough review of all these factors, the district attorney’s office will not be seeking the death penalty in this case,” Hochman, 62, said before the pretrial hearing. “That means that the maximum sentence that Mr. Reiner will be looking at is life without the possibility of parole.”
Nick was arrested near the campus of University of Southern California on December 14, 2025, hours after his parents, Rob and Michele, were found dead in their Brentwood, California, home. (Rob was 78, and Michele was 70.)
The three had attended a Christmas party at the home of comedian Conan O’Brien the previous evening, where observers said that Rob and his son got into an argument.
In the wake of their parents’ death, Nick’s siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, released their first public statement on December 17, 2025.
“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience,” Jake, 35, and Romy, 28, said in a statement to TMZ. “They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
Their statement continued, “We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life. We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”
Nick has been held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Downtown Los Angeles since his December 2025 arrest.
On August 12, Nick was formally indicted on two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances by means of lying in wait. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
“This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing,” Hochman announced in an August statement. “The indictment unsealed today also adds a special circumstance allegation that the defendant committed the murders by means of lying in wait. We hope that by having a grand jury return an indictment in this case, it will bring us one step closer to a trial and achieving justice.”
Later that month, Nick’s brother, Jake, spoke out in his first TV interview when he opened up to L.A.’s ABC7 about what life has been like since his brother’s arrest.
“I mean [Nick is] in jail so, you know it’s — it’s like I physically lost my parents and then Nick was arrested and it’s like, now it’s just me and Romy,” he explained.
Discussing his grief, Jake noted, “For me, [grief] manifests into anger, it manifests into rage, into how unfair this was, how I didn’t get a say in what happened. I didn’t get to stop it from happening. I had no choice in the matter, and I just have to accept the reality of it. And to me, that’s one of the most infuriating parts of all of this.”
