The rain didn’t dampen this party.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani braved the drizzle on Tuesday to fete Rev. Al Sharpton on the 15 year anniversary of his MS NOW show, “Politics Nation.” Hizzoner was spotted biking down 126th St. with security detail in tow, where he then joined Sharpton and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul at Red Rooster.
The evening kicked off with remarks from Tony winner Billy Porter, MS NOW president Rebecca Kutler, Sharpton and Hochul, who described the civil rights activist as a “living Forrest Gump.”
“He’s been through every significant event in American history, in his lifetime. He has been the voice, the conscience of America, but also the person who holds up a mirror and says, ‘Is this who we want to be?’” Hochul said.
Mamdani closed out remarks, praising Sharpton for keeping New York City mayors “honest long before I was born,” he said. “You have been someone, as the governor has laid out, who has been an icon in this city, and it is hard to believe that in one man, we find an activist, a broadcaster, a leader and a conscience — all at once.”
We hear the mayor was engaged in conversation with New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin, who led the charge to remove John Galliano as next year’s Met Gala honoree.
Meanwhile, Porter fanned out over the network’s anchors and took selfies with several, including Ari Melber. Also there: Phil Griffin, Jonathan Capehart, Michael Steele, Michele Norris, Symone Sanders Townsend, Stephanie Ruhle and Sharpton’s longtime girlfriend, designer, Aisha McShaw.
