How to wear ditsy florals without ever looking basic

When it comes to florals, I’m on the fence. While I can’t resist a girly look, there’s something about the predictability of a ditsy print that throws me. Is it a bit of a cop out? Stars including Sabrina Carpenter, Taylor Swift, Alexa Chung, Elle Fanning and Sadie Sink don’t seem to think so – yet the design still runs the risk of looking slightly meh.

Not that there is anything wrong with safe dressing of course – at the end of the day, wear whatever floats your boat. Yet as a fashion ‘person,’ it’s quite a feat to find a ditsy print piece that feels playful and elevated in equal measure.

Hence why we’re stepping up to the challenge. Thankfully, the runways did most of the leg work for us, with both spring/summer 2026 and autumn/winter 2026 offering ample inspiration as to how to style the look.

Pink petalled blooms peppered deconstructed white frocks and bodysuits at Yuhan Wang’s SS26 show, while Etro juxtaposed floral trims and patchwork panelled slip dresses. The very same season, Loewe – a long-serving ditsy print champion – funnelled sculptural mini dresses featuring scooped necklines and futuristic sheen finishes down the catwalk.

Dior subverted the trend further, cladding models in 18th-century silhouettes dotted with petite buds, coolly styled with tricorn hats for a dramatic, historical touch. Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana and Anna Sui followed suit.

The beauty of the design lies in it’s timelessness. Unlike so many other fads in today’s chronically online world, ditsy prints are immune to the trend cycle. Richard Quinn proved this to be true during his AW26 show, sprinkling minute florals across his signature ballgown constructions. Evidently, florals are not just for spring.
