Goldie Hawn opened up about her long-lasting romance with The Madison star Kurt Russell, revealing that while they didn’t always agree or even share the same politics, they allowed each other to feel a sense of freedom in their relationship.
“When I say freedom, it means liberation. I don’t feel penned in,” she told People. “We don’t always agree on stuff, which is fine. We’re both very spontaneous. [Our relationship] fed on a lot of goodness, a lot of wonderful life together.”
The couple first met on the set of The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band in 1966, yet things didn’t turn romantic between them until 15 years later when they co-starred in Swing Shift.
Goldie and Kurt have gone on to build a loving, blended family, with the unit including her children, Kate and Oliver Hudson, his son Boston Russell, and their son Wyatt Russell, whom they welcomed in 1986.
Goldie added that she maintained a positive attitude at all times for the sake of her family, including her numerous grandkids. “My life’s mission is to be happy. My life’s mission is to be an example for my children and my family,” she said.
“As you get older, things can get harder. Your state of mind matters. How you look at life matters, how you value moments in your life matters, because you’re feeding your own brain. So I say, ‘Right now, everything is amazing.‘”

“I think from the outside it looks a certain way, but inside, our family is just nuts, in the best way. Everybody’s so different, but everyone wants to enjoy their life. There’s a lot of joie de vivre. Even in, like, debate or when people are upset with each other, it’s like we’ve got this life force in our family, and it’s so great.“
She continued: “And it starts with the two of them. And they’re very different people too, and now as they’re getting a little bit older, their relationship is cute, I can’t stand it. Kurt just adores my mom. And I see him, he just loves her so much…it’s really cute to see.“

“I’m a bird. And you leave the cage door open, I may never fly out. But if you close that door, for my freedom and my independence, I would probably take all my feathers off.“
