The rumour mill is going into overdrive over who will be the next person to utter the famous words: “Bond, James Bond,” with newly married Callum Turner frequently in the mix.
The 36-year-old already has experience in major franchises, thanks to his role as Theseus Scamander in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, and he’s also had leading roles in the likes of Queen and Country, The Boys in the Boat and Masters of the Air.
But is he really willing to don the iconic tuxedo? When asked by The Hollywood Reporter, the star said: “I’m not going to comment on that.” He then added: “I’ll tell you what’s so funny about the Bond thing: Even your best friends ask you, people text you that you haven’t spoken to for 10 years – and you know nothing!
“It’s such a weird thing of something happening and nothing happening at all. I genuinely know nothing. I just find it quite amusing.“
However, the star, who recently married Dua Lipa, has a major industry backer, with George Clooney saying he thought Callum would make the “perfect” Bond.
In the same interview, George explained: “I hope Callum ends up being the next Bond. I think he would be a great Bond. He’s tall and handsome and charming and British, so he’s the perfect guy to do it.”
HELLO!’s Acting TV and Film Editor, Nicky Morris, also thought that Callum could be a good fit for the franchise. She said: “Callum Turner feels like the perfect choice for James Bond. Not only does he fit the brief when it comes to his physique, being 6’1, dark-haired and stereotypically good-looking, but he’s also 36, meaning he can commit to multiple films over the course of a decade or so.
“Plus, while he’s certainly a big name, partly due to his relationship with Dua Lipa, as well as parts in Masters of the Air, The Boys in the Boat and The Capture, he’s yet to have a career-defining role. Could this be his big moment? I think so.”
Who else is in the running?
Callum isn’t the only star who has been linked to the franchise, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson and James Norton previously being tipped as frontrunners for the iconic role.
Aaron has also earned the seal of approval from former Bond star Pierce Brosnan. “I think the man has the chops and the talent and the charisma to play Bond, very much so,” he said on RTÉ Radio 1’s The Ray D’Arcy Show in 2024.
Rocketman actor, Taron Egerton was also rumoured to have been considered for the next installment, however, he quickly shut down rumblings. “I think I’m too messy for that,” he said.
“I really love James Bond and particularly Daniel Craig’s tenure. But I think I wouldn’t be good at it, and I think there’s so many cool, younger actors who would be great for it. I think it would be wasted on me, probably.”
