All about his blended family

Richard Thomas is best known as the star of The Waltons, appearing as the family’s sensitive eldest son John-Boy. The aspiring author also served as the series’ narrator, appearing on screen for 122 episodes before his exit in 1977.

He’s also appeared in the two-part Stephen King inspired TV horror miniseries It, 1980 sci-fi feature Battle Beyond the Stars and Michael Douglas comedy Wonder Boys.

Richard first said ‘I do’ in 1975, wedding Alma Gonzales. Their first child Richard Francisco was born the following year and, in 1981, they invited triplet daughters Barbara, Gwyneth and Pilar. 

The couple parted ways in 1993 and Richard tied the knot the following year, marrying Georgiana Bischoff who has two daughters Brooke and Kendra. They share son Montana.

The actor recalled bringing his daughters home and asking what his son thought of the new additions. “He said, ‘I think I’m outnumbered.’ I told him, ‘We’re both outnumbered. We’re in this together.’ “

In 1982, Richard revealed to People that he and wife Alma believed they were expecting twins – it was only when she went into labour three weeks early the doctors discovered an extra addition.

His three daughters were born on 26 August 1981 but quickly established their very distinct personalities. Alma explained: “Barbara, the biggest, is quiet and obviously feels more secure. Gwyneth, the smallest, is perky and eats quickly, as if she knows she has to catch up. Pilar is the hysteric, the fussy one.”

Brooke keeps busy as a post-production producer and, via an update from sister Kendra in 2023, as a mother. Kendra wrote: “My niece is basically my size (no small feat), she’s funny as hell, and one of the few ‘children’ my dog likes.” 

“My sister and brother in law were a sight for sore eyes (I miss our weekly family dinners soooo much). We are all a little older but only better for it.”

Richard’s other step-daughter Kendra is a certified vinyasa yoga instructor in New York, crediting her love of the practice to her mother Georgiana. 

Kendra has opened up about her passion, posting in 2022: “I found yoga as a student when I didn’t even realize it was what I needed most. Later in life it found me. Teaching showed me what I was meant to do in life, and how I can help people in my own little way.”

Richard welcomed his youngest son Montana with his second wife Georgiana, and it seems he’s inherited his father’s creative gene, now working as a poet in New York. He released his book of poems Concerning the Dinner in 2025 and previously co-hosted the podcast Top Notes.

He told Office Magazine: “I think I’ve always — ever since I was a little L.A. kid — wanted to write poetry. But I’m also very interested in performance. I studied fine arts, and so that came with various forms of expression.”

Primetime Emmy winning actor Richard Thomas might be best known for his role on The Waltons but his recent projects have introduced the actor to a new generation.

Richard has worked on hit 2022 show Ozark, Sandra Bullock drama The Unforgivable and mystery thriller Tell Me Your Secrets.
