University of Maryland hockey player Ian Hutchison shared a message via social media before he died by suicide.

“I had amazing friends, a loving family and had enough memories to last a lifetime,” he wrote, in part, on Thursday, May 28.

The Terrapins hockey team confirmed Hutchison’s death on Sunday, May 31. He was 21 years old.

“To a great teammate, the funniest friend, a lovable brother, and an incredible man,” the team wrote via Instagram. “Having Hutch as a member of the Terps Hockey family is a beautiful privilege. He loved the Muppets, he loved the Montreal Canadiens, and he loved the ice. As long as we play, #31 will live on.”

Patrick Adams, a teammate of Hutchison’s, urged people to “remember to check in on those you love.”

“You never truly know what someone is going through despite what’s on the outside,” he commented on the post. “There is love all around us, and sometimes it only takes a conversation to find it. Ian will forever be missed, and if anyone needs to talk, I am always here. Fly high Hutch ❤️🕊️.”

In a separate post via the team’s Instagram Story on Sunday, Hutchison was remembered as “an incredible friend, teammate and son. Words cannot begin to describe the amazing kind of man Ian was.”

Hutchison previously played hockey at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, who also paid tribute to him after his death.

“It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of UMBC Hockey alumnus, Ian Hutchison, at the age of 21,” the team shared via Instagram. “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends, and teammates at UMBC.”

Puck Empire, a popular hockey social media account, honored Hutchison on Sunday, saying he was “an active follower of this page for years.”

“Just found out about the passing of Ian Hutchison, I’m absolutely devastated. May he Rest in Peace,” an Instagram post read.

The account added, “I’ve talked hockey with him plenty [of] times and I’m sure many of you have as well, he was always talking hockey in the comments. Loved the sport. You’re never alone man.”
