Having been married nearly two decades to his wife, Jane Hajduk, actor Tim Allen reveals the secret to a blissful marriage and what family life with their daughter, Elizabeth, is like today.
“I think a sense of humor saves us so many times,” the 72-year-old shared in a recent interview with Us Weekly, recalling a moment when Jane made light of their daughter Elizabeth’s upcoming departure for college this year. “Jane sat in the golf cart and said something really funny. I’d forgotten how much I adore her sense of humor.”
The Denver-born actor, set to reprise his role as Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 5, has been head over heels in love with wife Jane since they tied the knot in an intimate 2006 Colorado wedding. But what’s the secret to long lasting happiness? It seems laughter and compromise is what’s kept the pair going for many years.
“We’re very different people,” the Shifting Gears actor explained, describing how she’s athletic, so he got into training, and how he made concessions for her religious preferences.
“She’s a staunch Catholic, and I joined her with that,” he said. “I’m not a Catholic, I don’t belong, so I don’t have to obey the rules, but I think she admires that I made that move. We both pull a bit on either side.”
At the heart of it all, though, is a strong friendship, with Allen adding, “We’re pretty good buddies.”
The couple welcomed their own child together, Elizabeth Allen-Dick in March of 2009, who later followed her parents into acting, by reprising the role of Santa’s daughter in Santa Clause 2 alongside her famous father.
Tim – whose real name is Timothy Alan Dick – also has an adult daughter, Katherine Dick, from his previous marriage to college sweetheart, Laura Deibel. They were married for 15 years before they split in 1999 but didn’t finalize their divorce until 2003.
The Home Improvement star and his wife Jane, have endeavoured to keep their private life fairly quiet, with either rarely making public appearances aside from their acting roles.
In April, Tim did however come out to honor friend Bonnie Clevering at the Hollywood Beauty Awards, as he jokingly quipped: “Vogue magazine, red carpets… Not one mention of Santa Claus’s beard. Gotta be honest, it took me forever to grow that beard! It didn’t happen in moments.”
Tim grew his own natural beard for his role as Scott Calvin in the Christmas film The Santa Clause, but when Bonnie joined the franchise for the sequel, they worked together to create various looks as the character aged.
It seems Tim and his wife have kept a humorous attitude when it comes to the work they do, both together and apart, having appeared in several movies alongside one another including the 2001 comedy-drama Joe Somebody and 2016’s The Shaggy Dog and Zoom.
With so much shared screen time between them, fans wonder if the pair’s secret to a successful marriage is less about humour, and more about a common interest, as the famous parents continue to share in their love for life behind the silver screen.
As Tim shared on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2022, “Being an actor is a wonderful craft, but we are just a part of a teamwork experience.”
