Carter competed on The Voice season 24 in 2023. He earned four chair turns from judges Reba McEntire, Niall Horan, Gwen Stefani and John Legend with his cover of Whitney Houston‘s “I Look to You” during the blind auditions. Carter’s performance moved McEntire, 71, and Legend, 47, to tears as he dedicated it to his late mother, who died the year before his audition.

“This was the best second chance,” the South Carolina native said at the time. “I just made her so proud.”

McEntire told Carter, “I saw [the emotion], I felt it and I heard it when you were singing. That’s the kind of songs that do that to me too. I saw you get so emotionally involved, and that’s when you know you’ve got a great song and a great singer, when it touches your heart.”

Legend added, “I know your mother is proud of you.”

Carter chose to join Team Reba. He was subsequently eliminated in the battle rounds.

After The Voice, Carter continued to perform at local events in his hometown. He was scheduled to sing at Moncks Corner’s “Music on Main” event on Monday, April 27, according to multiple reports. The event has since been canceled.

Carter was also the cofounder of The Local Voice, a nonprofit based in Santee, South Carolina, that offers care to women battling breast cancer.
