ITV’s highly anticipated spin-off of The Chase, The Chase Around the World, finally arrived on our screens on Thursday night – and viewers have given their verdict on social media.
Hosted by Bradley Walsh, the six-part “global quiz adventure” sees The Chasers swap the studio for some of the world’s most incredible cities, challenging contestants to “the smartest road trip,” where the more you know, the further you go.
In a bid to win £100,000, six pairs of contestants set off on an epic chase around international cities.
What have viewers said about the show?
Some viewers criticised the new spin-off for lacking the rapid-fire question format that makes the original series so popular.
Fans took to social media to complain that the show felt slow, with one user noting, “What makes #TheChase a hit is the vast amount of questions asked that cover many subjects and various difficulty levels. This is one boring question every five minutes on a single subject; the exact opposite of what makes The Chase good.”
A second viewer agreed, commenting: “The attraction of #thechase or #beatthechasers is that you can play along at home. Whilst you can do that in this too there’s too much time in between questions.”
Not everyone was critical, however. Some fans expressed excitement for the new series, with one person writing: “I know it’s just started but I’m already loving it,” while another called for a second season.
What happened in episode one?
The six pairs had to solve a series of quiz questions, puzzles and cryptic clues set by Chasers Mark Labbett, aka The Beast, and Anne Hegerty, aka The Governess, in order to navigate their way across Rome and find Bradley at the finish line.
Mother and daughter duo Nicola and Maddie, sisters Kati and Amy, newly engaged couple Dilan and Emily, father and son, David and Steven, friends Matt and Cerys and father and daughter, Ashwin and Nikita were tasked with answering the questions correctly in order to complete the course, which would take them to the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the Colosseum, the Trevi fountain and the Spanish Steps. But the wrong answers would take them off-course and cost them time.
At the end of the first race, it was Ashwin and Nikita who finished last, meaning they had to go up against Mark and Anne. Thankfully, the pair beat the Chasers and were granted a place in the next round, taking place in Barcelona.
The Chase Around the World is available to stream on ITVX.
