The biggest night in fashion, the Met Gala, is back this first Monday in May, for its 78th annual party benefiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

The theme this year is “Costume Art,” with the exhibition set to consider depictions of the dressed body, pairing garments with art objects spanning some 5,000 years, and the night will also inaugurate the Met’s new, nearly 12,000-square-foot CondĂ© M. Nast Galleries.

Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour will co-chair the event, with Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez set as honorary co-chairs, a decision that has already sparked swift backlash and controversy.

But before the big night begins, we’re taking it back to the very same night 20 years ago, which was held on May 1, 2006, and was themed “AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion.” Take a look at some of the biggest moments below.

Arguably the biggest moment of the night was Sarah Jessica’s dress, perfectly coordinated with its designer Alexander, who used his family’s own tartan to partake in the theme celebrating British fashion. Reflecting on the moment while speaking with Vogue in 2022, the Sex and the City alum said: “[Alexander] knew how I felt about him, and there was so much affection and such a deep admiration and everybody loved him because he was such a touching person,” adding: “I have every pin he dropped from his mouth in my possession still. I have everything he cut off in my possession still. I have things that seem like nothing, from every fitting I did with him in my possession.”

Alexander died by suicide at age 40 in 2010, and the Met Gala honored him the following year with the theme “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty.”

The 2006 Met Gala was one of Bridget and Tom’s last major public appearances together before confirming their break-up in December. Tom started dating future wife (now ex-wife) Gisele BĂŒndchen the same month, and in February, Bridget announced she was expecting her first child, son Jack, who she shares with Tom.

Ironically, Gisele was also in attendance on the night, also wearing a John Galliano for Dior design. She and Tom would be dating seven months later.

Of course, Posh Spice had to make an appearance, and wore a Roland Mouret design that she bought herself at a sample sale, she later told Vogue. “It’s a little bit of a Mary Poppins dress, but it felt incredible, it was beautifully made.”
