Savannah Guthrie made sure to match her Today co-hosts. On Tuesday, July 7, the co-anchor sported a blue collared dress, but halfway through the live broadcast, she changed into something more fitting and that honored her mom, Nancy Guthrie.
At the beginning of the PopStart segment, Carson Daly noted that Savannah, 54, was the only woman not wearing yellow. Sharing the screen with her were Jenna Bush Hager, Dylan Dreyer, and Sheinelle Jones, all of whom wore something yellow.
Jenna teased her close friend, saying: “I texted you, and you did not receive my text.”
Later on, Savannah also realized her co-anchor Craig Melvin wore a yellow-and-blue-striped. After the Steals and Deals correspondent Jill Martin showed up in yellow, Savannah knew she wanted to join in on the fun.
“You guys, did you really have a memo? I’m changing!” she said with exaggerated frustration ahead of the commercial break. Moments later, Savannah was back on screen in a yellow gingham dress.
“I love that you just found this yellow dress,” Dylan said.
“I did, girls! I wanted to be with my ladies,” Savannah added, with Craig jumping in: “Oh my God, you changed that fast!”
Jenna decided she wanted to make wearing yellow something more permanent. “I told her on Tuesdays we wear yellow,” she said, to which Savannah replied: “We’re starting it today!”
What is Savannah Guthrie’s special meaning behind the color yellow?
Yellow is more than just a color for Savannah. On Monday, April 6, the journalist returned to Studio 1A after more than two months off the air. The NBC anchor was on a hiatus ever since it was reported that her mother Nancy Guthrie disappeared. And for that monumental day back at work, she chose to wear a bright yellow dress.
“Pretty shot of the sun coming up. Good morning, welcome to Today on this Monday morning we are so glad you started your week with us and it’s good to be home,” Savannah said, sitting next to Craig who sported a yellow tie.
The studio was decorated in yellow flowers, which was a nod to the Guthrie family after Tucson, Arizona residents started putting out yellow ribbons and flowers in honor of Nancy.
“The yellow ribbon is a sentiment of hope and support after someone goes missing. I believe the use of the yellow ribbons goes back to hostage-taking in the 1970s,” Nancy’s neighbor Laura Gargano told People in February 2026.
According to the National Museum of American Diplomacy, displaying yellow ribbons became popular in 1979 when 52 U.S. diplomats were held hostage in Iran. The wife of the highest-ranking hostage started the movement, which was inspired by the song, “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree.”
How long has Nancy Guthrie been missing?
It has officially been a little over five months since Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance from her home in Tucson, Arizona. The 84-year-old was believed to have been taken from her home in the wee hours of February 1, 2026, shortly after she was dropped off by her daughter Annie and her husband Tommaso.
The FBI and the local Pima County Sheriff’s Department have since joined forces in the investigation into her disappearance, which has hit multiple starts and stops over its five months.
On July 1, Savannah said on her family’s behalf: “It is five months of agony and unending trauma for our family. There is not a moment that goes by that we aren’t actively trying to find our mom.
