We all know that Wimbledon signifies the official start of the summer in the UK. It’s the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world, and the style action off the court can be just as exciting as the incredible matches taking place.
Every year, a myriad of celebrities and royals show off their spectator style. The Royal Box is the best seat in the house, and although there’s no dress code, guests are expected to wear elegant attire, with no hats to obscure the view of other spectators.

Princess Diana was a huge fan of tennis and served the most incredible array of Centre Court attire during her life. The mother of Prince William and Prince Harry often donned colourful, bright dresses, ’80s shoulder pads, funky sunglasses and sumptuous gold jewellery. She also loved tailoring, and one of her most resplendent looks came in 1995, when she attended the Men’s Final between Boris Becker and Pete Sampras.

Donning butter yellow long before it reached its peak in 2024, the royal stepped out in this smart suit, which consisted of a peplum, short blazer, and pencil skirt. Accessorising to perfection, she added vintage Chanel earrings and a string of pearls, which exuded an effortless sophistication.
This was a pivotal moment in tennis fashion as it showed that smart, ‘old-money-style’ tailoring is a classic option, but it can be modernised with colour, and it appears that many other royals followed suit.

Royals adopting fun tailoring at Wimbledon
A great example of this is Princess Kate. On day two of the prestigious tennis tournament in 2023, the royal surprised everyone with her fresh and fun mint green blazer, created by French luxury fashion house Balmain. It had an unmistakably retro charm about it, with its flat white buttons, decorative pockets and white cuff detail.
