The Princess of Wales is set to travel to Italy next week for her first official overseas trip since her diagnosis and treatment for cancer in 2024.
Kate, 44, has made a habit of pulling some of her best style moves during royal tours, with her last overseas tour (which was to Boston in 2022) offering us moments like her slinky emerald Solace London dress and her vintage 1995 Chanel blazer.
Princess Diana’s blue eyeliner matched the royal blue skirt and her sapphire earrings
Royal watchers will be waiting with bated breath to see what direction the Princess’ fashion takes this time. If looking for style inspiration, the Princess could certainly take cues from her late mother-in-law. Princess Diana embarked upon a 17-day tour of Italy in 1985 alongside her then-husband, Prince Charles.
A royal style muse
Perhaps the highlight of Diana’s tour-drobe was a dress she wore in Florence on 23 April. It was a Jacques Azagury number featuring padded shoulders, a twinkling star design, and a balletic royal blue tutu skirt.

The dropped-waist dress also had a bow fashioned to the skirt and was styled with sheer black tights, sapphire and diamond earrings, and heels. In true 80s fashion, Diana added electric blue eyeliner on her waterline.

During a visit to a church museum in Florence, Diana rocked a Jasper Conran suit. The two-piece set featured a longline blazer and pencil skirt and was teamed with a polka dot top and it wouldn’t be a monochrome 80s look without colourful tights.
Continuing her Jasper Conran suit streak, the royal wore this green set in Livorno. She fully leaned into a workwear aesthetic with her sharp white shirt and skinny tie.
Large collars were a cornerstone of Diana’s 80s wardrobe. For her arrival in Olbia, Sardinia, the princess chose a Jan Van Velden dress in powder blue and a hat by John Boyd.
While visiting the World War II cemetery in Anzio, the royal chose a tasteful look by Catherine Walker. The satin striped dress featured oversized shoulders and a statement built-in belt, as well as a bow adorning the scooped neck. Kate is a fan of bows, and they add a playful touch to any spring/summer ensemble.
Never afraid of embracing maximalism, Diana rocked a bottle green check and enormous hat while in Venice. Her coat, featuring statement cuffs, was designed by the masterminds behind her bridal gown, David and Elizabeth Emanuel.
