The Prince and Princess of Wales have a big decision looming for the future of Prince George’s education, and they may already have several options lined up.
The young royal, 13, will wrap up his four years of preparatory school in Berkshire this year and embark on his secondary education in September. While Prince William and Kate have yet to disclose where their eldest son will be enrolled next, in the latest episode of HELLO!’s A Right Royal Podcast, Melanie Sanderson, managing editor of The Good Schools Guide, shares that the royal couple could very well be holding multiple places as they consider their options.
When asked whether parents have to accept a place at a private school quickly and whether the process differs for the Waleses, Meanie told us: “Well, for ordinary people, they have to say ‘yes’ fairly quickly so their children would be accepted. Ordinary people who have been offered places would be accepting those places for secondary schools in the next few weeks.”
Though there’s not a “huge amount of time to accept” a school place, Melanie said she suspects “the normal rules possibly don’t apply” for the royals.
“I feel as though the Waleses may be holding multiple places at different schools. It sort of feels as though if they had made a definitive decision, somebody would know and it would be out there,” she explained.
George currently attends the same co-educational preparatory school, Lambrook, as his two siblings: Princess Charlotte, ten, and Prince Louis, seven. The Waleses choice of secondary school will mark a big parenting milestone for the royal couple, who both attended private boarding schools.
William’s all-boys alma mater, Eton College in Windsor, has widely been considered a top contender for George’s secondary school. Meanwhile, Kate attended the co-ed boarding school, Marlborough College in Wiltshire. Eton is located not far from Windsor Castle, and while a boarding school, Melanie says “the boys now are allowed a little bit of freedom to pop in and out of school at the weekends.”
George’s younger siblings still have several years of preparatory school to go at Lambrook, but HELLO! understands that the Prince and Princess of Wales have already started looking at options, including Wellington College and Marlborough College.
