Prince George's monosyllabic response to question during family outing

Prince George delighted royal fans on Saturday when he joined his parents and younger siblings at the Commonwealth Games, where they watched events like netball and cycling.

After his appearance in the crowd, the royals chatted with Morning Live star Gethin Jones as they visited Wales House, one of the hubs for Team Wales.

During the chat, the Princess of Wales revealed that five-time Olympic champion Dame Laura Kenny had hinted that she and the Prince of Wales should consider track cycling. “Be careful what you wish for, as they want to put us on a tandem bike in the velodrome,” the royal joked.

When Gethin cheekily asked if the Wales children would like to see their parents on a tandem bike, George quickly replied: “No,” before William intervened. “We embarrass you enough as it is,” the father-of-three teased.

Royal fans were surprised when George stepped out with his family, as the 13-year-old royal appears to be catching up to his father height-wise. William stands at an impressive 6ft 3, and yet George, who had a growth spurt this year, is already at shoulder height.

Kate has previously noted her son’s height, telling a royal fan last Christmas that the future heir to the throne was already “catching up with everybody”.

Prince George’s year of change

The young royal’s attendance at this year’s Commonwealth Games with his family comes before his big move away from home as he is due to start boarding at Eton College in September.

It was confirmed in June that George would start attending the world-famous boarding school, with Kensington Palace saying in a statement: “Kensington Palace can confirm that Prince George will attend Eton College from this September.”

Melanie Sanderson, managing editor at the Good Schools Guide, said that Prince George could not have made a better choice.

“Eton, above all the other schools, has a breadth that’s really unparalleled. All the other public schools have extracurricular opportunities, in theatre and on the sports pitch, but Eton really does take it to another level. Eton very much delivers on the global stage. He will be rubbing shoulders with the children of the great and the good from all around the world.

“He’s going to be head of the Church of England one day. Chapel is less of a central feature at a lot of schools than it used to be, but it’s still a central part of Eton. William was confirmed at Eton and I would expect George to go down the same path.

“I think a coed school presents some issues that William and Kate may not want to address. They may wish someone to curate the kind of people George is socialising with. I think that’s easier in an all-boys environment.

“Eton will have its socials with the lies of Wycombe Abbey, but at the end of the day, they will be back in single-sex classes. For me, it was always the obvious choice. It would have been my top pick as an educational consultant.”

The young royal will join a cohort of around 260 boys starting at the same time, but he will not be sharing a room with any of them as the college has a strict rule that each boy has his own space.

Eton College’s website explains: “From the very beginning, each boy has his own study-bedroom: there are no shared rooms. Boys thus have their own private space and are required to organise themselves and to develop self-discipline in meeting tasks and deadlines.”

George will soon be apart from the rest of his family

According to Eton’s website, the young royal will have an incredible 28 subjects to get stuck into, including “nine Modern and Classical Languages”. Among the subjects on offer are traditional ones like English literature, mathematics and the three sciences: biology, chemistry and physics.

The rest of the curriculum consists of Ancient History, Latin, Greek, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, History (medieval, early modern or modern), History of Art, Geography, Design, Art, Music, Theology, Theatre Studies, Economics, Government and Politics, Music Technology and Computer Science.
