President Donald Trump is slamming former President Barack Obama’s claim that governments around the world would function better if women were in charge.
“I love women, I think they’re great, but what a ridiculous statement that is, right?” Trump, 80, told a reporter during a Sunday, September 27, press conference in Washington, D.C., when asked to respond to the former president’s claim that the world would be better if women were in charge.
In a clip of the moment, shared via APT News’ YouTube account, the reporter had referred to earlier comments made by Obama, 65, during a Monday, September 21, interview with historian Doris Kearns Goodwin at Massachusetts’ Salem State University.
“Barack Obama just said if you put women in charge of every government for two years, things would be better. Do you buy that?” asked the journalist on Sunday, which drew Trump’s vocal disagreement.
Obama, who served as the 44th President of the U.S. from 2009 to 2017, said at last week’s event that if women led for two years, “I have a strong belief that things … they wouldn’t be perfect, but they’d be better.”
He added at the time, “I’m confident about that,” which drew rapturous applause from the sold-out audience.
Trump and Obama have shared a prickly public relationship since the former took the presidency baton from the latter in January 2017. In February, Trump shared a racist AI-generated social media post that depicted Barack and his wife, Michelle, as primates in a jungle.
Although the post was later deleted following public backlash, Trump told the press in the aftermath that he “didn’t make a mistake” and did not feel the need to apologize.
Four months later, Obama said Trump harbors an “obsession” with him.
“You gotta ask him what it is … the obsession,” Obama said when asked about Trump’s “fascination” with him on the June 24 episode of Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson’s “All the Smoke” podcast.
“I obviously have a room in his head,” he continued. “A suite in his head. First of all, when I was president, the last thing I had to do was worry about what someone said or what my predecessor did. They’re gone. I’ve got work to do.”
Last week, Trump’s wife, First Lady Melania, said during an appearance on Fox & Friends that her husband was “doing the best that he can.”
Melania, 56, explained on the Wednesday, September 23, episode, “He’s very focused. He has a lot on his plate. It’s very different, what’s going on around the world now. But I think he’s doing the best that he can. He works nonstop, he has the most energy than anybody. He’s, from morning until evening, nonstop working.”
