Authorities have issued a telling statement amid the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today star Savannah Guthrie. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department, which holds its headquarters in Nancy’s hometown of Tucson, Arizona, shared a post on X on Thursday night clarifying a major new update in the case.

Recent reports revealed that the department was working closely with a lab in Florida to conduct DNA testing on samples taken from Nancy’s home, and that the lab was now sending their samples to the FBI for further testing with new technology.

“PCSD has worked with the FBI since the beginning of the Guthrie investigation. This is not new information,” the department’s post read. “The private lab we utilize in Florida continues to share information with the FBI lab & other partner labs across the country. DNA analysis remains ongoing.”

Authorities issued a statement regarding Nancy’s disappearance on Thursday

The telling statement reflects the department’s apparent frustration with the noise surrounding the investigation, as they felt the need to clarify their process. The department reportedly returned to Nancy’s house in Tucson to take further DNA samples, as the investigation continues to hit a dead end.

According to reports, they are currently examining a mixed DNA sample taken from her home, which contains genetic material from more than one person. DNA testing was done on a black glove found near Nancy’s house in February, which matched the description of the chilling doorbell camera footage released by the FBI showing a masked man approaching her door and attempting to dismantle the camera.

The DNA found on the glove did not match any entries in the national database, leading to another dead end for investigators. The department’s statement comes as Savannah Guthrie disappeared from the Today show set on Thursday, prompting fans and supporters to wonder if there was a breakthrough in Nancy’s case.

Savannah took two months off after her mother went missing on February 1, with the TV star spending time in Tucson to be with her siblings and to assist in the investigation. She returned to work on April 6 with the support of her co-workers, including Craig Melvin and Hoda Kotb.

Savannah seemed to switch places during an interview with Anne Hathaway on Thursday, after introducing the actress ahead of an ad break. “I’m the luckiest girl right here. I’ve got Anne Hathaway right here, Mother Mary herself,” she said, referring to Anne’s upcoming film. “She has a sneak peek at her new movie, and we have talked a little bit about The Devil Wears Prada 2.”

The show then switched to an ad break, after which Hoda replaced Savannah in the interview seat, prompting confusion from viewers.

“Watching The Today Show, and Savannah was set to interview Anne Hathaway before commercial break. Went to commercial and came back, and Hoda was in,” one person wrote on X. “I hope everything is ok [because] that was odd. I watch every day, and they normally never do that.”

“That’s strange! Maybe she got a call and was going to leave after the last set?” another posted. “Looks like it could have just been a teaser for after the break and Hoda was always going to do the interview,” said another.

Savannah returned to the set shortly thereafter, quietening the rumors that she had left to be with her family. Nancy went missing on February 1, after enjoying a games night with her daughter, Annie Guthrie, and son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni. Authorities believe she was taken by force from her home in the night, as her doorbell camera was dismantled just before 2 a.m., and her pacemaker was disconnected from her phone at around 2:30 a.m.
