Peter Krause‘s shocking exit from 9-1-1 paved the way for his new show — but he is still hoping to share the screen with some of his former costars on Line of Fire.
“I could see Kenneth Choi playing a fiery senator at some point in time,” Krause, 61, exclusively told Us ahead of the NBC show’s premiere on Monday, September 21.
Krause gushed about the possibilities that have come from joining Line of Fire.
“I love and feel very fortunate to be working with Hope [Davis] on this project. I have not embarked on a family show or a relationship that is as complex or has as complex a history as [our characters] Jane and Mike do,” he added during the joint interview. “So this is new in that way.”
While teasing the season, Krause mentioned “the depth of experience” that the fictional couple has had so far, adding, “We’ve yet to even explore it at all. We’re just getting started. It’s really quite huge.”
He continued: “It’s a particularly complex relationship and a complex family. They have a complex history, and I just haven’t had anything this huge — to me anyway — to start off with. Parenthood is big and as a family, we deal with things. But the backstory for these characters is just really big and complex and I’m looking forward to getting in there more.”
Line of Fire centers around a family of agents from various branches of law enforcement who find themselves tangled in a deadly conspiracy. In addition to Krause and Davis, the show stars Kat Cunning, Tommy O’Brien, Taylor Bloom and Charlie Barnett.
“[Creator] Joshua [Safran] is masterful at story architecture. I asked him not to tell us things that our characters did not know,” Krause recalled. “It’s helpful for us to move forward. Everybody has blind spots in life and I think that it’s important in terms of storytelling that these characters — like anybody — have blind spots too.”
Krause felt reinvigorated by the project.
“I particularly enjoy the family drama,” he noted. “But I know that the suspenseful elements of the show are also really well constructed by Josh.”
Line of Fire marks a return to NBC for Krause after his six-season stint on Parenthood, which ran from 2010 to 2015. He then was a main cast member on ABC’s 9-1-1 before the show surprised fans eight seasons in by killing off Krause’s character.
“I’ve heard that many fans are upset by this loss and they have a right to be. It is a loss. That said, it was more than a bold creative choice on a bold show. Bobby Nash was written in sacrifice and he was built for this,” Krause wrote in a 2025 statement after the episode aired. “First responders risk their lives on the job so that others can see another day. His story arc honors them. We at 9-1-1 salute all the incredible men and women who do these dangerous jobs and strive to keep us safe.”
Krause elaborated on how he was mourning his time on the show, telling Good Morning America at the time, “He was willing to sacrifice himself so that others could see another day. And I will miss everybody dearly. This was my workplace, for eight years, eight seasons. And I am really going to miss everybody: Angela and the fire team and the crew.”
