Paul McCartney opened up about his retirement plans during an interview with Willie Geist on the May 29 episode of the Today Show. The singer appeared on the show to promote his new 20th solo studio album, The Boys Of Dungeon Lane.

“I think I know the answer to the question, but is there any world where you put down the guitar and you go, ‘I think I’ve done it'” asked Willie.

“I hope not. I don’t believe I do it professionally. It still seems like a hobby to me. Magical every time,” replied Paul.

He continued: “I just love noodling around on a guitar. If I’m lucky something nice will appear, a nice chord or some works I like and I will just follow that trail.”

Five of the 14 tracks explore the star’s youth – “As You Lie There”, “Days We Left Behind”, “Down South”, “Home To Us” and “Salesman Saint”. It revisits memories from the singer’s formative years in Liverpool, including his early experiences with late bandmates George Harrison and John Lennon before their rise to Beatles fame.

Paul’s whirlwind career began with The Beatles and his new album serves as a way to reunite the Fab Four. “These extraordinary new songs find Paul in a candid, vulnerable and deeply reflective mood, writing with rare openness about his childhood in post-war Liverpool, the resilience of his parents, and early adventures shared with George Harrison and John Lennon long before the world had ever heard of Beatlemania. These were the years that historians continue to examine, the quiet, unguarded days that unknowingly laid the groundwork for a cultural revolution. Paul visits them not as myths or folklore but as his own memories,” read The Beatles’ official website.

“This is very much a memory song for me. The album title, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, comes from a lyric in this track. I was thinking just that, about the days I left behind and I do often wonder if I’m just writing about the past but then I think how can you write about anything else? It’s just a lot of memories of Liverpool. It involves a bit in the middle about John and Forthlin Road which is the street I used to live in. Dungeon Lane is near there.  I used to live in a place called Speke which is quite working class. We didn’t have much at all but it didn’t matter because all the people were great and you didn’t notice you didn’t have much,” said Paul of the album.
