Olivia Rodrigo is done clearing things up when it comes to her rumored feud with Taylor Swift.
âI donât really read that far into it,â Rodrigo, 23, told the New York Timesâ âPopcastâ of the internet speculation on Friday.
âI think it comes with the territory, and itâs par for the course. I think if I dove into every internet detective sleuth that got things right or wrong about my life or any of my relationships, I think Iâd just go crazy. Thereâs just not enough time in the day.â
Swift was, at first, a very vocal supporter of Rodrigo when she first rose to fame with her single, âDriverâs License.â
In 2021, the âCruel Summerâ hitmaker took to Instagram to publicly declare her support for the young star as she shared a screenshot showing that âDriverâs Licenseâ had earned the No. 3 spot on the iTunes charts â right below two of her âEvermoreâ songs.
âI say thatâs my baby and Iâm really proud,â she said at the time of Rodrigoâs feat, according to âToday.â
Rodrigo even named Swift, 36, as one of her inspirations, saying she looked up to her in a 2021 SiriusXM interview.
As a response to Swiftâs support, Rodrigo called the pop star the âkindest individual in the whole world.â
âI feel so lucky that I was born at the right time to be able to look up to someone like her,â Rodrigo added. âI think sheâs incredible and all of her support and genuine compassion and excitement for me has just been so, so surreal.â
However, itâs believed that the stars started experiencing friction after Rodrigo gave Swift and her producers Jack Antonoff and St. Vincenta a delayed writing credit on her song, âDejĂ Vuâ which is featured on her debut album, âSour.â Swift already had a writing credit for Rodrigoâs song, â1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Backâ which featured an interpolation of Swiftâs song, âNew Yearâs Day.â
The âgood 4 uâ singer admitted in 2021 that she drew inspiration from Swiftâs âCruel Summerâ for the trackâs bridge.
âBut I wanted the last bridge to go crazy and I love âCruel Summer,â itâs one of my favorite songs ever,â she told Rolling Stoneâs âThe Breakdown.â
âI love the yell-y vocals in it, the harmonized yells that she does. I feel like theyâre super electric and moving, and so I wanted to do something like that.â
When Rodrigo released her sophomore studio album, âGuts,â fans speculated that Swift may have been the face behind songs like âVampireâ and âThe Grudge.â
Rodrigo addressed the speculation in her 2023 interview with The Guardian.
âI was very surprised when people thought that,â she said. âI mean, I never want to say who any of my songs are about. Iâve never done that before in my career and probably wonât. I think itâs better to not pigeonhole a song to being about this one thing.â
She also shut down feud rumors in her 2023 Rolling Stone cover story.
âI donât have beef with anyone,â Rodrigo said. âIâm very chill. I keep to myself. I have my four friends and my mom, and thatâs really the only people I talk to, ever. Thereâs nothing to say.â
