Investigators have revealed new information about a key piece of evidence in the case of Nancy Guthrie, who disappeared from her home in Tucson, Arizona, on February 1.Â
The 84-year-old mother of Today star Savannah Guthrie failed to show up to her usual church service the morning after a games night with her other daughter, Annie, prompting the family to report her as missing.
In the weeks following her disappearance, authorities have been following several potential leads to her whereabouts. A major breakthrough came on February 10 when the FBI released footage obtained from Nancyâs doorbell camera that showed a man in a black ski mask attempting to dismantle the device the same morning that she was allegedly taken.Â
The man wore black gloves and had a black backpack on, which was identified as a 25-liter âOzark Trail Hiker Packâ exclusive to Walmart. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos shared with NBCÂ that investigators were now looking at the backpack from a different angle.
âWeâve now learned that maybe it wasnât purchased out of Walmart,â he explained. âThat backpack new, is exclusive to Walmart, but whoâs to say I didnât buy it and put it on eBay?âŠThatâs what weâre looking at.â
He added that authorities were yet to identify the brand of clothing the suspect was wearing, but he was confident they were on the right track. âI think that investigators are definitely closer. Weâve got a lot of intel, a lot of leads, but now itâs time to just go to work.â
Sheriff Nanos also addressed the clip released by Fox News Digital, taken from a doorbell camera around 2.5 miles away from Nancyâs home, that saw a car drive past at 2:30 a.m., which fits into the suspected timeline of her disappearance.

âLook, what I would tell you is this: weâre aware of it, and weâre looking into it, just like any other piece of evidence,â he told NBC. âWeâre looking at that vehicle as well as hundreds of thousands of other vehicles that were out driving that time of day.â
The sheriffâs update comes just a day after Savannah, her sister, Annie Guthrie, and Annieâs husband, Tommaso Cioni, visited the memorial outside their motherâs house to pay their respects.Â
âWe feel the love and prayers from our neighbors, from the Tucson community and from around the country,â Savannah wrote on Instagram, alongside a photo of the memorial.
âPlease donât stop praying and hoping with us. Bring her home.â The siblings also left a note at the memorial, which read: âMomma, We miss you so much! Our hearts are broken. We are standing on ash, scorched earth! But, Mom, though we are surrounded by so much darkness and uncertainty, our love burns bright.â
According to authorities, the doorbell camera outside Nancyâs home was disconnected at 1:47 a.m. on February 1, and her pacemaker disconnected from her phone app at 2:28 a.m. Drops of her blood were discovered outside the front door and inside the house, and investigators shared their belief that Nancy was likely abducted.
