Marvel movies? For summer? Groundbreaking.
Meryl Streep called Marvel movies âboringâ while discussing the complexity of her character, Miranda Priestly, in âThe Devil Wears Prada 2.â
The Oscar winner made the shady comment Friday on Hits Radio Breakfast Show when the interviewer asked Streep about Mirandaâs âsoft sideâ being highlighted in the new sequel.
âI feel like you get a realistic view,â the 76-year-old actress stated. âI think we tend to Marvel-ize the movies now.â
âWe got the villains and we got the good guys,â she continued, âand itâs so boring.â
Streep pointed out that real-life is nothing like the good vs. evil battles that play out in Marvel movies.
âWhatâs really interesting about life is that some of the heroes are flawed and some of the villains are human and interesting and have their own strengths,â she explained.
âSo thatâs what I like about this [movie]. Itâs messier,â Streep concluded.
Streep is not the first Hollywood A-lister to shade Marvel.
Big-time movie directors Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and Quentin Tarantino have all gone after the genre, with Scorsese saying in 2019 that superhero movies are ânot cinema.â
The âTaxi Driverâ director also compared MCU films to âtheme parks.â
Meanwhile, Tarantino blamed Marvel for Hollywoodâs lack of movie stars, saying in 2022 that the superhero characters overshadow the actors themselves.
As for Streep, she also took a swipe at Travis Kelce during the âDevil Wears Prada 2â press tour.
In a recent featurette for the film, Streep randomly mentioned the Kansas City Chiefs player when she talked about the most difficult part of filming in Milan, Italy.
âThe hardest thing about shooting in Milan was walking in stilettos on the cobblestones,â she said. âIâd like to see Travis Kelce do that.â
Travis, 36, responded to Streepâs shade on Wednesdayâs episode of his âNew Heightsâ podcast.
âI hope she doesnât have beef with me!â Travis joked while chatting with his brother and podcast co-host Jason Kelce, noting that heâs âa fanâ of the âBig Little Liesâ actress.
Travis then joked, âOh, Meryl, you have no idea how good I am at walking in heels. Okay?â
But when Taylor Swiftâs soon-to-be husband realized stilettos have âa pointy bottom,â Travis let Streep get away with the shady comment.
âIâll give credit where creditâs due,â he said. âI donât think I can do it, Meryl. Iâll let you have that.â
Streep is back for âThe Devil Wears Prada 2â as Miranda, the cruel editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, a role she originated twenty years ago.
She revealed in a recent interview that she initially refused to star in the 2006 cult classic, but she changed her mind when they doubled her salary.
âI was sure it would be a hit. And they needed me, I felt,â she explained.
Streepâs co-stars Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt also reprised their roles for the new sequel.
