Azzi Fudd made headlines on Monday, April 13, 2026 when she was drafted as the 1st overall pick in the 2026 WNBA draft. The 23-year-old shooting guard was selected by the Dallas Wings, who her girlfriend, Paige Bueckers, 24, just happens to play for.
The couple played together at the University of Connecticut for four seasons before Paige was drafted No. 1 overall by the Dallas Wings in the WNBA in 2025. After Monday’s draft, they are officially reuniting on the court.
“I’m excited to play again with Paige,” Azzi told ESPN. “She’s an incredible person, an incredible player. It’s gonna be a lot of fun.”
Here’s everything we need to know about the WNBA’s newest power couple and Dallas Wings teammates Azzi Fudd and Paige Bueckers.
Both Azzi and Paige were basketball phenoms during their youth. Azzi, who grew up in Washington, D.C., was named the Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year in 2019 and has won three gold medals with the United States youth international teams.
Paige was raised in Edina, Minnesota and quickly fell in love with basketball. She played on the junior varsity team at the local high school when she was in seventh grade and became the first female high school player to be featured on the cover of basketball magazine, Slam.
In 2017, the two elite players met when they tried out for the USA Women’s Under-16 National Team. Of course, they both made the team, went on to win gold, and forged a friendship that would eventually turn into something more.
Paige, who is a year older than Azzi, started playing at UConn in 2020. While Azzi was still in high school, she was encouraged to commit to UConn by her friend.
“Paige is the kind of teammate that everyone wants to play with because she’s so selfless,” Azzi told Glamour in August 2025. “The way she plays, she gets everyone involved. She’s also just a great player, so she attracts so much attention that it makes it easier for everyone else to get good looks and opportunities on the court.”
In April 2025, the teammates won the National Championship together against South Carolina, scoring a combined 41 points.
They went public with their relationship in July 2025
Azzi and Paige’s chemistry on the court was undeniable, they didn’t go public with their relationship until Paige was drafted into the WNBA. In July 2025, during an interview with WAG Talk, Paige was asked about her “D1 girlfriend.”
The point guard aced the test, answering nearly every question correctly. After being asked: “Girlfriend reveal, it’s…”
Azzi was primed to play basketball from a young age. Her parents, Katie and Tim, played college basketball like their daughter. Katie was named the ACC Rookie of the Year for NC State before transferring to Georgetown.
And Tim played at American University from 1991 to 1996. Azzi was inspired by her mom, who dreamed of playing professionally, but retired early due to injuries.
“I want to achieve her dreams that she didn’t get to achieve and do the things that she couldn’t do,” Azzi told ESPN in 2022.
A month after they went public with their relationship, Azzi and Paige were interviewed on Close Friends Only with Instagram. After quizzing each other on their favorite WNBA players, Azzi noted that hers was “probably Paige Bueckers,” to which Paige responded: “I was about to say, mind you, I’m in the WNBA now.”
