Its earnings were out of this world.
âMasters of the Universeâ was No. 1 at the box office on its opener Friday, raking in over $11.75 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
The flick, which The Post called a âkooky toy movie,â is based on the figures like He-Man and Skeletor, which Mattel released in the early â80s.
âThere are barbarians with battle axes and swords, robots with laser guns, spaceships, a warlock with a skull for a face,â its director, Travis Knight, told IndieWire.
âI do think itâs kind of tricky material. In the sense that, itâs weird. Itâs almost deranged. Itâs pure, uncut, Colombian-grade â80s excess. Itâs completely out there.â
The sci-fi psychological horror âBackroomsâ landed in second, with sales of over $7.97 million on its second Friday in theaters.
The Post praised the film, which follows an alcoholic furniture store owner who stumbles upon another dimension, as âdisquieting and smart.â
In third was another horror movie, âObsession,â which took in $7.47 million in revenue on its fourth Friday in theaters.
âThe Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act,â which is the final two episodes of the animated series âThe Amazing Digital Circus,â took fourth, with just over a $4.3 million take.
âStar Wars: The Mandalorian and Groguâ came in fifth, taking in $2.5 million on its third Friday in theaters.
