John Barrowman appeared glassy-eyed as he delivered an update to his fans from the front seat of his car and explained why his elderly parents were living at the home he shares with his husband, Scott Gill.
The 58-year-old Scottish-American actor, best known for his roles in Doctor Who and Arrow, shared that he was caring for his mum and dad as they battled health issues and old age.
Setting up his phone on the dashboard of the car, he pressed record and delivered an emotional video message to his 1.3 million Instagram followers, sharing that he was starting a series detailing the realities of caring for his 90-year-old parents.
Wearing a blue linen short-sleeve shirt and a pair of silver-framed glasses, the former Dancing on Ice judge posted the clip alongside a lengthy caption that read: “For those of you who don’t know, my parents are 94 (Dad) and 91(Mum) and they now live with Scott and I. They need help on a daily basis due to health reasons and age.”
It continued: “So I’ve decided to do some posts about looking after my parents. A lot of people take care of their ageing parents and I thought some posts about it might help other people who are doing the same.
“The little things you have to deal with and can sometimes be fun but also can sometimes be a challenge.”
Fans and followers expressed praise for the star in the comments and applauded him for taking good care of his parents. One noted: “Sending lots of love to your mum and dad. Hope the treatment works.”
Another added: “Sending you and your family best wishes,” while a third said: “Even these trying times can have moments of joy, love, and silliness that you will remember fondly in the future.”
A heartbreaking loss
John’s update comes just over one month after he announced the death of his beloved Jack Russell, Captain Jack Harkness. The 18-year-old dog passed away in the arms of the devastated star, following which he uploaded a video explaining what had happened to his social media account.
In the clip, he told fans: “It was really difficult. But I got home tonight and he was still with us. And he waited until I got home and I held him, we put him to bed next to me and I held onto him and I felt his heart stop and now he’s gone.”
The actor, who was sitting next to his husband of 13 years, Scott, and continued explaining: “He died in my arms. I am sad but it is just the way I wanted it. He waited for me all day. He’s such a good boy. Thank you for all your support and all your patience for me.”
