Jay-Z is has lifted the lid on his family life in a very rare interview – and he’s one proud dad!
The award-winning artist shares 14-year-old Blue Ivy and twins Rumi and Sir, eight, with Beyoncé, and his children are always at the front and center of everything he does.
Opening up about fatherhood to GQ magazine, the artist shared: “[Being a dad] gives everything meaning, everything. I’ll go cross-country, do what I have to do, and I’m back on the plane that night. I love taking them to school. I love picking them up. Everything means so much more.”
Jay-Z and Beyoncé primarily reside in Malibu with their family, but they also have homes in Bel Air and the Hamptons – where they spend most summers.
They are an incredibly close unit, especially during difficult times. The singer opened up about how the support from his family, in particular daughter Blue, meant the world to him following allegations of assault – in a since-dismissed suit – that was filed against him in December 2024.
“Our family, we are a tight unit,” he shared. “Blue has this jersey with ‘Jay-Z’ on the back. She put it on one day. She went to school with the ‘Jay’ [on her back]. I was just in the corner, like tears coming down. Seriously. To have that, it’s priceless.
“People can say that [they’ll always be there for you], but it’s very rare that you’re going to have to exercise it. And in the darkest moment for me, I got to see those sorts of things.”
Jay is very proud of all his children, and discussed daughter Blue’s rise to stardom following her involvement in Beyoncé’s world tour.
Blue made her stage debut with her mom back in 2023 during the Renaissance tour, which saw her receive harsh words from critics.
While this would discourage most adults – let alone a then 11-year-old – Blue took it all in her stride, and came back fighting, much to the delight of fans.
The talented dancer was a backing dancer for most of Beyoncé’s hits during her Cowboy Carter tour in 2025 – and Jay was delighted.
Reflecting on his daughter’s journey, he shared: “That was amazing. On the first tour there was a lot of conversation around her first performance, and she worked really hard to get to that point, but she still wasn’t going for it. She still was going through the motions. And then she just started fighting back.
“I saw her fight maybe for the first time in her life—like, not everything is just given to her and everything is easy. She fought for it.”
He added: “She’s almost on every number. I had to take her off some, like, ‘Man, you can’t be on that stage when she’s singing ‘Six-inch heels…’; are you crazy?”
Beyoncé, meanwhile, previously opened up about her life as a mom in an interview with GQ. She said: “One thing I’ve worked extremely hard on is making sure my kids can have as much normalcy and privacy as possible, ensuring my personal life isn’t turned into a brand. It’s very easy for celebrities to turn our lives into performance art. I have made an extreme effort to stay true to my boundaries and protect myself and my family. No amount of money is worth my peace.”
All three of Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s children are talented, and sound like they have bright futures ahead of them. While Blue is a talented performer, grandmother Tina Knowles gave an insight into twins Rumi and Sir’s contrasting personalities in a previous interview.
She revealed that Rumi – who joined Blue and Beyoncé on stage during the Cowboy Carter tour – was following in her big sister’s footsteps with a love for all things creative, while Sir was more into “numbers”.
She told E! News: “Rumi is amazing—an amazing artist, painter, and creator… ” As for Sir, who is the most private out of his siblings, she added: “Sir is very quiet. He does all of the numbers stuff, so he’s not into fashion as much. She then added that he was “very, very smart.”
