It’s official! Good Morning America is moving in a brand new direction for their weekend hours.

The show’s morning hours on Saturdays and Sundays usually consisted of a panel of three anchors, mainly Whit Johnson and Gio Benitez, with Somara Theodore as the meteorologist.

Now, the show will feature two anchors dedicated to Saturday broadcasts, and two separate ones to Sunday broadcasts, plus a regular weekend meteorologist.

Whit will now anchor GMA on Saturdays with Rachel Scott, while Gio will anchor the Sunday broadcasts with Rhiannon Ally. Leslie Lopez will be helming the weather department on weekends for GMA.

Whit, who also serves as the anchor for ABC’s World News Tonight on Saturdays, has been anchoring GMA Weekends since 2018, while Gio, who is the network’s transportation correspondent and frequently appears on the main shows on weekdays, has been a GMA Weekend anchor since 2023.

Leslie is the newest addition to the crew, only joining ABC News in April 2026. She previously spent a decade with ABC-owned affiliate KABC-TV, anchoring their broadcasts from 4-6 AM.

Rachel is the network’s senior political correspondent, best known for her coverage from Capitol Hill and the White House, and has been with ABC since 2016, when she joined as a production associate. Rhiannon has been with ABC since 2021, appearing across a variety of the network’s productions, including Good Morning America First Look and World News Now.

The weekend edition was previously anchored by Janai Norman, who revealed in April 2026 that she had effectively been let go from the show after her contract was not renewed by the network, although with no prior knowledge of such.

Somara also served as the show’s weekend meteorologist, a role she took over officially in 2023, although it has not yet been revealed what role she will now play with the new GMA Weekend structure.

GMA’s senior executive producer Simone Swink shared in a statement: “We know weekend mornings are precious to our audience, and we could not be more excited to have Whit, Rachel, Gio and Rhiannon as our new weekend team, along with Leslie, to help our viewers make the most of their Saturdays and Sundays.”

“Plus our new format will allow this team to show up more on our weekday broadcasts, too.” The new GMA rotation officially begins on September 12.

Whit told People after the news was revealed: “As I enter my ninth year as a GMA weekend co-anchor, I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity — and especially excited to launch Saturdays with my good friend Rachel Scott.”

Gio added: “I cherish the relationship we have with our viewers. And to be able to split the weekend with two of my dearest friends, Whit and Rachel, gives us all the chance to help keep them informed throughout the week.”

“I’m looking forward to bringing the same reporting mentality I have at the White House and Capitol Hill to the anchor desk,” Rachel shared. “That part of my job isn’t changing…. The reporting never stops, even from the anchor desk.”

Rhiannon, a mom of three, also commented: “I know how hectic life can be. It’s tough to make sense of the world when you’re juggling work, school and sports schedules and just trying to be a good mom. I’m thrilled to help people kickstart the day — informed and entertained.”
