Drake suffers crushing $1.5m blow as infamous ‘curse’ strikes again after World Cup final

Drake has suffered another eye-watering betting loss after the rapper’s infamous “Drake curse” appeared to strike once again following the FIFA World Cup final.

The Canadian superstar lost a staggering $1.5 million after backing Argentina to defeat Spain in Sunday’s showpiece match, only to watch the European champions secure a dramatic 1-0 victory after extra time.

The 39-year-old placed the seven-figure wager through betting platform Stake on the eve of the final and stood to win more than $5.1 million had Argentina lifted the trophy.

Instead, the defeat added another chapter to the long-running superstition surrounding the rapper’s sporting predictions.

Over the years, fans have coined the phrase “the Drake curse” after noticing an uncanny pattern of teams and athletes losing after receiving the rapper’s public support, appearing alongside him in photographs or benefiting from one of his high-profile wagers.

The superstition has become so well known that an entire website, TheDrakeCurse.com, now tracks his betting record and the growing list of unfortunate sporting outcomes linked to the five-time Grammy winner.

His latest setback comes just days after another costly gamble. Earlier this week, Drake reportedly lost a separate $1 million bet after backing Irish UFC star Conor McGregor to defeat Max Holloway.

Born Aubrey Drake Graham, the chart-topping artist remains one of the world’s biggest music stars despite his recent run of betting misfortune.

Known for hits including One Dance, Passionfruit and Hold On, We’re Going Home, Drake surprised fans in May by simultaneously releasing three albums, Iceman, Maid Of Honour and Habibti.

The ambitious triple release marked his first new music since 2023 and saw Iceman become his seventh number one album in the UK.

Away from music and sports betting, Drake has continued to make headlines following his widely publicised feud with fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar.

The pair dominated the music world last year through a series of diss tracks, with Lamar’s Not Like Us becoming one of the biggest songs of the year after taking aim at the Canadian superstar.
