Calling all detective drama lovers! Death In Paradise star Ben Miller has officially confirmed that a sixth season of ITV‘s Professor T is in the works – and we can’t wait for it to air.
In an appearance on The One Show on Tuesday, Ben, who leads the drama as the titular professor, revealed that not only is season five on the way, but season six is already in development.
“We’ve got season five that will hopefully be coming out in the autumn,” he said. “I mean, spoiler alert, we’re actually working on season six. It’s a very exciting situation to be in.”
Originally launched in July 2024 and based on a hit Belgian series, Professor T follows Ben’s highly esteemed yet quirky character Jasper Tempest, a criminology professor at the prestigious University of Cambridge.
Much like Ben’s character DI Richard Poole in Death in Paradise, Professor Jasper Tempest has an uncanny knack for solving twisty mysteries, but lacks the interpersonal skills that make him easy to gel with his peers.
Despite his struggles with OCD and a tortured past, the professor is pulled out of his role in academia by a former student turned police detective, who convinces him to help with a tricky case. If you love mystery dramas with particularly quirky protagonists, like Death Valley, Sherlock and Monk, then Professor T is certainly worth tuning into.
What is Professor T about?
The series, which currently has four seasons available to binge, stars Ben Miller (Bridgerton, Death in Paradise) and Frances de la Tour (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, The History Boys), who plays Jasper’s mother, Adelaide Tempest.
In the upcoming season five, which is expected in autumn, fans can expect “further surprises” as new relationships develop, while the professor explores more complex crimes. These include “a boxing match that takes a bloody turn and a series of inexplicable sudden deaths at an upmarket spa.”
The synopsis promises: “Many favourite characters will face some tough choices, and the stakes for Professor T and his team have never been higher.”
Who stars in Professor T?
Alongside Ben and Frances, the new season sees the return of Zoë Wanamaker (Shadow and Bone, My Family) as Zelda Radclyffe and Juliet Stevenson (Emma, Truly Madly Deeply) as psychologist Dr Helena Goldberg.
They’re joined by Barney White (Against the Law), Sunetra Sarker (Playing Nice, Casualty) and Rhian Blundell (Vampire Academy, Nobody Girl), who play Detective Dan Winters, DCI Maiya Goswami and Detective Chloe Highsmith respectively.
What have the cast and crew said about Professor T season 5?
Speaking about his role in season five, which wrapped filming in August 2025, Ben said: “I’m beyond thrilled that we will soon be breaking ground on a fifth series of Professor T. Working with such a talented cast and crew is a joy that even a heavy woollen suit can’t stifle, and I can’t wait for audiences to see the treats we’ve got in store for them.
“The fact that audiences worldwide have embraced the show so warmly is hugely rewarding, and we’re already brimming with ideas to make Series 5 even more quirky, heartfelt, and surprising. Here’s to another season of baffling crime, dreaming spires, and ironing that tweed…”
Meanwhile, ITV Assistant Drama and Comedy Commissioner Callum Dziedzic added: “It’s a real pleasure to bring another series of Professor T to audiences. With its gripping crimes, fascinating characters, and captivating cast – led by the brilliant Ben Miller – the show continues to surprise and delight both ardent fans and newcomers alike.
“Over time, it has truly found its own identity beyond the original, and we can’t wait for viewers to see what’s coming in the next chapter.”
Seasons one to four of Professor T are available to watch on ITV and BritBox. In the US and Canada, Professor T is available on the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel. Season five is expected to land in autumn, with season six currently in development.
